I have an 11month old female jack russell. She has a great tempermant, I never had a male so I wouldn't be able to compare. However, a lot of it has to do with the way you train and socialize the dog. The amount of energy they have is crazy, they will play and run around all day nonstop. They are so much fun though. Mine does hate cats and squirrels though--jack russells have very obsessive personalities. They have very little patience and are very persistent.

You are stereotyping a breed just as bad as someone thinking all pits are bad dogs. Jack russels are a terrior breed and that makes them more high energy than say a toy or lap dog or non-sporting breed. They have a higher prey drive, but a well trained jack will not hate cats. The sex doesn't really matter it depends on the dog's place in the pack. If you want a calmer dog, pick a submissive pup or adult. This could be male or female.

i prefer a fixed female, no leg lifting to the furniture. Remember Jacks are not good (as in fight till they are both bloody) with a same sex buddy, and they are extrememly active dogs,,,don't get one that you can't excersize daily. That's actually take out and walk at least half hour a day or it will develope behavior problems from excess energy. Just running around in the yard is not enough for these little dynamos.I have 2 and I can tell you that they are more than a handful. Good luck!

I have a female, 11 yrs old, Belle. She is sweet, but not even dog-friendly, very territorial.
I have read horror stories about Jack Russels who tolerated cats, until one fateful day when the owner came home to find a dead cat. I would not take the chance of leaving them alone together.
Do your research before you get one -- they require alot of attention and training!

Jack Russells are busy and somewhat aggressive dogs. YOu will have a lot of work to supervise it with other household animals. Make sure you are up to the job. The temperament is not that different between the sexes.
