I have a 40 yr old cousin I just recently reconnected with after 15 years. He's always helped me and my family and somewhere he's lost himself. I was very shocked to find he is almost 500lbs. I came home, cried for him , and then realized, that can't help him! But there must be something that can. He doesn't have much income, does anyone know of any funding available for individuals like this. He's in the OH area.... God bless anyone who can point me in the right direction. I'm totally in the dark on this one. Thanks.

You have to be careful. You just reconnected with him after 15 years. Can you imagine someone you hadn't seen in 15 years starts in right away with dieting tips, exercise, watching every morsel you eat. No. Get to know him first. EASE into any kind of discussion about his weight. Trust me....he KNOWS he's obese. You need to show him you love him for HIM...not someone you want him to be. Make a great dinner for him. Subtlety make it healthy. Tell him this is what you eat for better health. Things like that. Slowly. If he talks with ease about wanting help with his weight, great. If he won't take the hint and refuses to talk about it, then just love him for who he is...regardless of his size.

For help, he would need to contact his county's department of social services. I'm sure he needs medical attention (can't have that much extra weight without lots of health problems) and they can get it for him if he is low income and no insurance. If he's able, there are doctors (and short-term nursing facilities) who could do gastric surgery and rehab for him.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

You compassion for your cousin for whom you haven't seen for many years is a welcome "Breath of Fresh Air" in a society that has become so self centered to say the least.

There are probably many reasons for the weight gain...not just "over eating"

You say he doesn't have much income......Does OHIO have a Public Health System??

That would be my first place to start to get any ball rolling...As he will need not only Physical care, but Mental care as well....

This is NOT going to be a QUICK fix ~ If you want to help your cousin this will need a commitment from you as well...

Your cousin has to have the desire to get healthy.I dont know his situation. If his weight is due to poor eating or medical.I know that in Kentucy, gastric bypass is now covered by medicare/medicaid.Im not sure about Ohio.I hope that he doesnt resort to this.If he really wants to improve his health, eating right is the first step.Encourage and help him if hes willing. You dont need fancy diets or expensive equipment to lose weight.Simply going for a walk or doing something physical will help greatly.I realize that he probably has problems walking but how badly does he want to get in shape? take baby steps and slowly progress as he gets stronger.God gave us amazing bodies that can recover from the abuse that we put them through.Let him know that he is special to you and that you care about him.God bless the both of you

Does he want to lose weight? Obviously you want to help him out but look, hes 40 years old. In any case I read an excellent book by a Bob Scwarz called Diets Dont Work that really helped me.

It might be a good one to give him as it doesnt require you to start dieting but it does make you aware of a lot of the psychological issues that cause overeating and explains how to fix them and listen to your body.

first he has to want to do it. if in fact he is ready and willing you need to get him to the doctor to make sure it is safe for him to start some type of excercise regimen. after he gets his clearance from the doctor, contact your local YMCA and get the paperwork started on him for the "open door" policy. this policy is used for people with low to no income. dont worry, its not a lot of paper work but it sure would help if his doctor wrote a note giving your cousins limitations if any, then the trainers at the YMCA can design his workout according to that. now........you can get your cousin and you (if you can work out with him) on a new "healthy" journey in your lives. just think...........you may have just saved his life.
