Annie Leibowitz gets a lot of attention but to be honest I don't see that her stuff is all that great though I like the black and whites that she does. I think she is connected and fits into the right segment of the entertainment community and has access to celebs and it has become a sort of milestone in your career to be photographed by Leibowitz. She fits into just about every politically correct lifestyle category that celebs are so anxious to push that button. Ansel Adams did incredible outdoor photography that is literally everywhere. The best photographer in the world is probably some guy or girl laboring in obscurity and taking incredibly moving and technically fascinating photographs. The key to be famous in photography is to be connected and someone taking pictures in Bulgaria or Poughkeepsie will never be connected to the entertainment industry to have their pictures viewed. Photography exists at two levels (or more), one is to be a competent photographer and the other is to be connected will enough to have access to people and to have people want to be seen showing your photographs. That does not mean they are great pictures though.
