I would add in medium to dark brown furniture.....or you can just stain the ones you have, that's what I do. and he can help!
I would bring in a bold textured curtain, something with a darker blue, beige/cream color, with a little of red....A striped pattern, that goes from top to floor.
And add pops of red in the room, A red throw blanket, and red throw pillow.
And a beige comforter, and white sheets.
These colors can carry him into college, they are masculine, and comfy
Its cheap to do......grab striped fabric at walmart, and sew two pieces together at the top for the rod.........stain is cheap, you can get it on clearance, and throw blankets/pillows you can grab at thrift stores, or if you have some in your house grab that.
I love doing rooms, and give then a whole new look and I never use more then $50.00

According to color design theory, you can decorate with orange, a strong orange...you know or also yellow. A little bit of green will also be OK if you will put some articles like lamps, pictures; using green contrasts

I love soft brown with baby blue, actually. You will find a LOT with those colors to accent with, too. Even Wal-mart has nice baby blue (or robin's egg blue) and brown accessories. If you want, you can make it less metro and more "country saloon" depending on your son's personality. Google "blue and brown" and see if you like what you see.

Adding some darker color drapes will make him happy. You could put a nice deep navy. My son is 14 and those are the colors in his room.

Orange is the complimenting color of blue. You can use any value or "shade" of orange. Even a Orange-brown will work.

I would go with blue, brown, and a lighter shade of taupe. It'll grow with him. In a couple of years he'll be in highschool so he'll appreciate it.
