I'm getting married to an Army guy in June, he's an E2. What do we have to do to get BAH? is it hard to get? will it cover all of our rent? does it matter that he's only an E2? does it take a long time to get?

He'll have to file the proper paperwork and produce a marriage certificate. It will become effective immediately. NO, it will not completely cover your rent in most cases. It will be based on his rank and the area that you're stationed. Some areas get more than others. Post housing will also be available to you. He'll have to get your name put on a waiting list and you can live on post, rent free. BAH isn't to pay your rent, it's to help cover the cost. Our rent has never been totally paid by BAH.

You don't have to do anything to get BAH. It is automaticly included in your pay. Married NCOs get a couple hundred bucks a month more for BAH than a single NCO, so make sure to send in your marriage certificate and get his orders changed to include you. The actual amount you get for housing varies greatly depending on where you are stationed. Even as an E2, it will almost always be enough to cover all of your rent.

as soon as you have the marriage certificate, he has to take that, as well as your Social security number to Personnel and enter you into DEERS. Once that is done, he can request BAH w/ Dependnats( at the same time and place, actually).

BAH is based on the zip code of the duty station. it may or may not cover rent. In some places, it can do so easily, in others you may have to pay out of pocket. Expect at least one or two pay periods before it kics in, but it will be back dated to the date he turned in the paperwork.

But E2 BAH is never very high at all, no matter where you get stationed. so expect to be paying out of pocket unless he can get housing on base.

It all depends.. some bases require you to live on post for a year in this case you will not get BAH or any extra money for being married. A lot of bases have a waiting list for housing so there should be no problem with getting BAH. Most of the time he just needs to go to finance with your marriage license and get a few papers signed by the person in charge of his barracks.

How much money you get for BAH depends on rank and cost of living in that area. You get half of your BAH on each paycheck.. For example if you BAH is $500 you will get $250 on the 1st and $250 on the 15th. As an E2 don't count on living in the lap of luxury. If your base as available housing I would advise you to live on base. Move off base when he gets more rank..

The other replies are accurate, but I will tell you my perspective. We live on post. For our area and my husbands rank, I think we get about $900 in BAH. Would have to check the LES. I dont know because we dont actually SEE the BAH. It gets applied to his check, and then taken right back out in an allotment to GMH, the contractor who manages post housing here. It covers rent, power, gas, water, and garbage pick up. Plus we have self-help facility where you can get light bulbs, filters, grass seed, etc. You probably wont get that in off post housing either. The only thing we have to pay is phone, cable, and internet. BAH is SUPPOSED to cover living expenses, but I have found that if you live off post, it doesnt. Maybe for the 2 of you, you could get a small apartment and do just fine. The housing we have here is MUCH better than what we could find off post. We have a 4 BR, 2.5 bath duplex home with a living/dining room combo and an extra den, huge laundry room, a military closet (a must have) plus a huge storage area outside. You will find that post housing has more storage because they understand that you need a place to put ALLLLL that TA-50. As well, when you move around, you buy stuff for one house that isnt needed in another so you gotta put it somewhere.

Its based on rank and zipcode....if you live in an area with high standards of living like new york city your bah for an E-2 is something like 1800-1990 per month, and could be alot lower in a smaller town, something like an extra 800 a month

He will have to contact finance and inform them of the marraige, and fill out the nessasary paperwork, then your BAH will start. BAH is based on Rank, and with or without dependents, which his of course will be with dependents. And the rate is also based on the cost of living in the area you at.

You SHOULDN'T have any trouble. It will kick in once your marriage certificate is turned in and all the paperwork is complete. Give it about 30 days after you submit it to make sure.

I'm not real sure, but I think post/base housing is available for junior enlisted. You might check that, as well.

Here are the amounts for 2007. Once all the paperwork is done, it will usually be a month or so for it to show up in his pay.
