It's not a particularly well-written book.

The bible was written by men, over thousands of years. books were translated, lost, rewritten, left out and conjured up. I think it is not a book at all but rather chronicles. Either way I've read the bible over. It is not something that you can just follow like a book. To me it has been over interpreted, blown out of proportion, criticized and admired.
I don't doubt it's authenticity of being written, but I do question it's real purpose.
How do we know that these ancient people weren't conversing with aliens or some elaborate hoax.
All we have is a damn book...do you think that 2000 years from now, people will think that Harry Potter was the messiah?
Give me a break...too many variables...too many unknowns

Of course you are going to feel that way, as do all other comments I have read thus far here on the site. The reason you feel that way, is because, since you are not a follower of Christ, the writings in the Bible are just words with no inspiration and depth.
But, once you become a follower of Christ, the words become alive to you through the Holy Spirit. Everything becomes clear. God uses examples of people's lives to guide us not to make the same mistakes, the prophesies in the Bible are true -- it has been proven. Prophesies in the Old Testament, for example, revealed the Messiah, his descendents, how He would die, the situations surrounding His death, and much more.
The Word in the Bible is the Inspiried Word of God, using people as the tools to get the Word to the people.
But, of course, you don't understand. Mortal man alone, without the help from the Holy Spirit will never understand.
I am not angry for your comment, because I know you speak out of ignorance of what God can do for you in your life.

I agree with you that folks ought to see the Bible as just a book first before making a decision about what it says.
A problem of Holiness clouds the issue, it having been around for so long and so widely owned. The Bible plays a prominent role in History because so many wars have been fought over its subject matter.
Then there is the problem of its readability: it is written in an Art Form that is relatively unknown in our world today. We are not well acquainted with Poetic Forms and the forms we might recognize don't include this Form, Parallelism.
Neither are folks familiar with metaphorical heightened speech or poetic techniques such as versified handbooks.
These points in mind one can easily see the mysticism surrounding the Bible.

If people saw the Bible as "just another book" no one would read it. It is poorly written, boring and convoluted, and contradictory with no real ending.
In fact... I might venture to say the the majorit of people who HAVE a Bible haven't even read it all the way through... It's like those middle school book reports where you just tell people what you know about the book from the summary on the back.

That's like saying that the Declaration of Independence is just another term paper. It is not and therefore can not be looked at that way. To read the bible as just another book is to miss the point. It is no value when read that way.

Because it's not just a book. It is so much more than "just a book". I'm not going to sit here and explain it b/c I don't have enough time. The Bible was written over a thousand years by more than 40 people. Those people were filled with the Holy Spirit and He wrote the book through them. That is the word of God. That's only the begining of why it more than "just a book"
May God help you to open your heart and fully understand

Because it is not JUST A BOOK. It is an assembled work of statistics known as a library. Actually it is a stack of related books.
That it is a library is one of the reasons it's difficult to understand.
Compare it to 44 police officers writing tickets on different days of the month in different years.
Might be interesting reading to some, but statistics to others.

The bible is a complicated read that one has to have some knowledge of ancient history to even begin to understand. Also, 12th grade reading comprehension is around 30 percent nationwide. It's easier for some people to have someone read and interpret it for them.

The Bible is the Word of God. It was written by holy men that were inspired by God through the Holy Spirit. This makes it very important to Christians. It's not a fairy tale story. If this is how you feel about, then don't read it but how dare you say it's just a book. It's vital to Christianity because it has God's word and Jesus' teachings in it. That's why we feel so strong about it. I see it as a life manual.
