Make your own, definatly.

Use whole wheat flour and nothing with any sort of coloring or artifical flavor.

Make sure the rest of his diet is good though-whole grains, fresh fruits and veggies, fresh meat etc...

I wouldnt use sugar substitutes, just moderate real sugar (as unprocessed as you can get it)

First of all I doubt that putting him on such a diet is going to help you or him.
You can of course cut out sugar from his diet. However colors and flavors are not making him hyper. Use sugar substitutes and sugar free snacks. make sure that his fruit and fruit juice intake is lower. fruit is is very high in glucose. And has been known to cause hyperactivity. Obviously cutting all carbs down some will help. Because carbs are what boosts our energy system (do not take all carbs) Just make sure that his foods are still meeting his nutritional needs. Some kids are just hyper. My oldest is very high energy. But we keep him as active as possible. And watch what he eats and he is improving tons:)
Good luck,
Megan
