Laxatives assist the body to pass solid waste when a person is constipated. Chronic use can cause a multitude of problems from rebound effect where a person can become so constipated that the only way to pass waste is to have it digitally (manually-someone puts their finger up your anus and digs it out) removed, complete colon blockage (must be surgically remove and results in a colostomy bag). With complete blockage the person is still eating they can start to have fecal regurgitation. This is when the bowels back up and you start vomiting the waste that won't pass. Laxatives are only to be used under the care of a physician and as a last resort when diet and exercise don't work. Extreme care and caution should be taken and they are never to be used as a DIET aide.

Laxatives are medications that make you poop. You take them when you have pretty bad constipation.

But they're really unhealthy if you take them regularly for a long time, and despite what many bulimics think, they're actually not that helpful with weight loss.
