marking the wall always works. you can use a carpenter pencil (its much thicker and still erases) but you should stand with the back of your heels touching the wall. if you have molding at the bottom of the wall that could throw off the measurements a little (less than an inch)

Stand with your back to the wall close to a corner. Streching your arms out horizontally as much as you can put a finger tip in a corner. Mark the point were your other fingertip is touching. If you are normally proportioned the distance from the corner to your mark is your height. Repeat a few times to loosen up and get a good stretch, it is important you get your maximum stretch.(If the stretch measure turns out to be longer than your height you probably have bad posture- stop slumping.)

Stand with your back to the wall, hold a hard cover book vertically on your head and, keeping the book firmly against the wall, move away and mark your height with a pencil on the wall. Now you can move away and measure your height with a measuring tape.

this is the way I have did it a couple of times; I laid on my floor with my feet touching the recliner in my bed room and I marked where my head stopped with a washable marker then I took my tape measure and measured the lenght of my feet and the top of my head. And it worked just fine.I'm 5'11' standing up and lying down.

bypass to a close-by convenience shop and look stunning by skill of the interior front door. they generally have a height marker stunning there so while somebody robs the area, they could tell how tall the guy replaced into! verify your height that way... :)

Standing against the wall and marking is pretty foolproof, but if you don't want to mark your wall up put a long piece of wide masking tape up first in the approximate area of your head and mark that. :)
