Quasar,
I'm sorry that you're having a tough time sleeping! I know how frustrating it can be to be tired all day long, and then get to your cozy bed--and not be able to fall asleep!
Have you tried listening to soft music, like sounds of the ocean? That can sometimes help.
Sometimes I'll "trick" my body into falling asleep by creating "dreams" while I'm still awake. I'll think about being in a hot air balloon, drifting up and away. I don't put any pressure on myself to falli asleep, I just use imagery.
Other times, I try a hot cup of milk with honey.
An hour before bed I try to relax and calm my mind. It might sound a little selfish, but I make that "me" time. Even though I may not be stressed at the moment, I make this time special for me, and I'll listen to music or read, or type Yahoo! Answers!
If all else fails, see if a doctor can prescribe something such as Ambien CR or Lunesta. I had to quit the Ambien because it made me sleep walk too much. Lunesta works wonders for me though. I have had terriffic luck.
Natural medicines such as Melatonin and Valarien did not work for me, but they do work for others.
Sometimes taking a hot shower or bath can be relaxing.
Try not to think about what stresses you out, if it is possible. Tell yourself that it's not going to get solved or fixed tonight, and there's no use thinking about it anymore (till tomorrow).
I would also suggest that you try other ways of combating your stress, if it is possible. Keep a journal, go for a walk, pick up a new hobby, or talk to someone. I have found these useful.
Good luck to you, and I hope it helps.
Oh, one more thing...if nothing works, I would consider seeing a doctor if you haven't already...sometimes insomnia is a symptom of a more serious medical condition.
Know that I'll be keeping you in prayer.
God Bless,
Chris

Take pills only if you are desperate.
Try homoeopathy. Consult a homeopathic doctor. I think he will prescribe PASSIFLORA Q ( mother tincture) maybe 20 to 30 drops in water. Sure you will sleep, and also get up refreshed the next morning. He will also recommend taking a few pills of Kali Phos 6X, four times a day. Depending on your other symptoms and complaints, Ignatia may be recommended.
Take a warm shower before bedtime, a glass of warm milk with honey, physical exercise can also help. Tire your body in order to relax your mind. REMEMBER, you cannot solve ALL the problems in this world. You are already doing what you can, and cannot do more. LET GO, and LET GOD. Good luck.

I used to suffer from bad insomnia on and off for years.i used to go tru periods of maybe 4-5 months at a time with maybe a break from it of 2 months or so in between.i was only getting on average 2 hours sleep a night.i felt horrible.i collapsed in work a few times.i dont suffer from it anymore.it kinda went away of its own accord but if i dont sleep well for a few nights in a row these days i kinda get paranoid about it coming back.what i think is great is books about insomnia.they have some great tips in them to aid with your sleep.they wont cure your insomnia but there are tips that will aid you in getting better sleep.changing a few day to day habits can help.i dont know how much it would benefit you but it would be worth checking out some books.you'd be amazed how a few tips and simple changing can help with your sleep.i wish i had some of the tips when i was bad with insomnia.hope this helps in some way

Many insomniacs rely on sleeping tablets and other sedatives to get rest. The most commonly used class of hypnotics prescribed for insomnia are the benzodiazepines. This includes drugs such as temazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, flurazepam, nitrazepam and midazolam.
Be careful :These medications can be addictive, especially after taking them over long periods of time.
Pomegranates are also believed to help insomniacs sleep.
Adding honey to warm milk helps get the tryptophan in your system faster.
hoped i helped
