The best man "stands up" for the groom and lends emotional support. Typically, he stands with the groom at the front of the church during the processional. Many grooms ask their fathers to serve as best man, but it is equally acceptable to ask a brother, cousin, or close friend. He stands to the outside of the groom (a historical position of protection) and keeps the bride's ring until the clergyman requests it.
Groomsmen are close friends of the groom who take part in the wedding service, witness, and endorse the groom's choice of a life partner. Generally, they walk to the front of the church just before the bridesmaids begin the processional.
Ushers are the groom's friends who welcome guests to the wedding service and arrange for them to be seated in an orderly fashion. They may additionally serve as groomsmen.

Groomsmen usually escort the bridesmaids to the altar and line up alongside the groom to support him.
