Yep! Starting with dogs from responsible breeders (@$1000),annual vetting expenses, heartworm, flea dn tick prevention,food,bedding,grooming,training......I budget $1000 a year for each of my healthy dogs. Of course you can expect at LEAST one unscheduled vet visit a year too. Emergency situations usually run in the several hundreds of dollars. I won't go into the cost of treating a cancer dog.

YES. A breeding quality dog is going to cost several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars to obtain. They require higher quality of everything all around. The best food, more frequent vet visits as you want to prevent not just cure any illness. Testing for any and all possible genetic defects that your particular breed is prone to. Proof of lineage testing with healthy results for all. Think of it in terms of sending your skinchild to Harvard. That is the kind of money we are talking about to be a responsible, reputable breeder. This is of course, inferring you have a heart & a soul and wouldn't want to be a puppy mill, using animals like they are disposable "things" rather than the feeling, loving, sentient creatures they are.

I recommend you read the links below, there is some really good info included there.

5 million dogs are killed every year in the US by shelters.
That breaks down to 13,698 dogs per day, or
19 dogs every TWO SECONDS.
Killed for want of a home.
Most thrown away because they have become a nuisance.
Why would you add to that?
The only reason to breed is to improve the breed, not because your dog "is so cute" or "special".

Be a hero. Save a life. Spay and neuter your pets today. Adopt shelter animals.

If you adopt a dog for any reason it is expensive. If you are thinking about breeding them to sale...don't!!! People need to understand that when you bring a dog into your family they are a big responsibility just as a child would be. They completely depend on you for everything...food...care...love... Twenty years ago I raised minature poodles. After one of my girls gave birth much too early I spent the next several hours listening to these poor little premies cry and their mother crying while trying to comfort her babies while they were dying. This was in the middle of the night and back then you could not get a vet to come out. I did not have what it took to put these babies out of their misery I just sat there and let nature take it's course. But I did realize that I had no business raising dogs. Now when we adopt a dog we have him or her fixed and they are loved and spoiled rotten as a member of the family. Trust me there enough dogs out there needing homes that you certainly do not need to add to the number. It is not a hobby nor will you make money off of the litters unless they are show dogs. I beg of you do not do this...just love the ones you have and get them fixed it will save you a ton of money and heartbreak down the road.

It depends on the type of dog you get. The vet will cost about the same for all sizes though. If you have never owned a dog (it sounds that way) you should not get a puppy. adopt an older more reliable dog from your local shelter. puppys are a TON of work and first time owners have an extremely hard time training them. their personalitys have not yet developed and older dogs you can choose a outgoing, sweet, never biting, obedient dog.

I would recommend a smaller dog for you. Such as a Boston Terrier. Very little mateniance, and not alot of health problems in their blood. They don't require any brushing and do not shed everywhere. They don't need tons of baths. They don't need lots of toys and stuff to keep them occupied. They don't eat alot (which is very good because food for any bigger dog REALLY adds up). Overall they arn't that expensive (probably the cheapest dog) and are extremely sweet dogs. They are so laid back.

But keep in mind that any dog may get sick and you should have a back up plan of money to pay for them. They deserve the very best.

What do you mean by "raise dogs"? If you mean breed them than yes it is very, very expensive!
If you mean you want to get a dog for a pet then yes again it can be very expensive.
They need medical care all their shots, and if you want to breed then all medical certification to prove your dogs are worthy to breed. Not to mention Food, proper bedding, and a extreamly hugh amount of your time.
If cost is not an object then think about all the time you have to invest in your pet. Don't have that amount of time or money then go to friends home and enjoy their pet.

If you are thinking of raising dogs solely for sale then don't. Dogs should be bred for the betterment of the breed only and from sound and healthy stock. Far too many people churn out poor specimens from poor quality stock for financial reasons. Humane shelters are full of them. Go to a couple in your area then decide if you'd like any of your puppies to end up there puttinga burden on an already overstretched rescue situation.

YES it is VERY expensive to breed dogs the right way and it is NOT a way to make money. You need the right facilities which means a lot of good fencing, kennels, gravel runs, etc., you need to start with good breeding quality stock that has had its health testing and has passed all of them, you need to have a good vet and be able to pay him for vaccinations, surgeries , consultations etc. You can't take off for a weekend and leave your dogs without paying a dog sitter etc.
