I have a problem. My schnauzer pup is 5 months old and he is very different from all the dogs I have ever owned in a bad way. He is super hard to train (I have had dogs my whole life) We started to gently housebreak him at three months, taking him out hourly, by four month every two.5 hours. He is pretty much housetrained but will urinate and defecate in the hall upstairs if we do not confine him to the bathroom at night. I have never had to confine a dog this long, max was three weeks. He will go poop outside (out 20 min at a time) return inside and poop in the hall once in a while. Besides this he run in front of our feet and tries to trip us continuously and he drags his pet bed from room to room and humps it all day long. The pooping and tripping are the worse. He also does not like me to hold him, he will play bite and become hyper. He seems strangely hyper and yet we watch his diet closely, only giving him good quality dog food. I am sad that he is not learning HELP!!

I have had this problem before also with a blue heeler pup! sometimes you run across a dog that you just can not train! Sissy became an outside dog after a year of trying to housebreak and crate train. It broke my heart!! I love my dogs dearly but I could not tolerate the soiling and the chewing. We live on a farm that sets off the road by 9/10 of a mile so she is free to roam and is still safe and believe me she is the most pampered outside dog there could be!!

I wish you the best of luck on training yours and be patient!

As far as the tripping goes, try rolling up a newspaper and popping his bottom when he starts getting under your feet. The paper makes a loud noise but does not hurt the puppy. You need to get an enzyme destroyer for the hallway! if it is carpet give up and replace it. If he can smell where he has messed he will return to the spot again and again. I use 1/2 white vinegar and1/2 water solution to clean up "accidents" in my home.
You should consider a crate also. Locking him in the bathroom he will feel left out and abandoned and will destroy woodwork and show his anger by messing in the house. They do have ways of getting even even though most humans don't recognize it. A crate will allow him to see what is going on( put where most family functions are going on) and learn that bad behavior will
not be tolerated!! He is begging for attention and wanting to show dominance. Most schnauzers are a little on the hyper side anyway so channel it towards a good behavior! let him chase a ball across a yard or some other safe physical, daily activity and it may help with the other problems.

Sounds like he rules the roost. None of the behaviors listed should be viewed as acceptable. First of all rule out the possibility that he's not sick in anyway. Next, monitor him and set a schedule. He should be walked good and long in the morning to potty and excersize, then eat and potty outside a little after eating, then crate or confine for a nap. Try using a leash on him when he's in the house with you. This should correct him from going out of sight and defecating and will be easier to control the "tripping." If he is not neutered, I would suggest that also. It may help considerably with hyper-activity, compulsive behavior and marking. If he's hyper, he's got energy and frustration to burn and a quick run around the backyard or romp in the house isn't going to cure it, that's probably why he's annoyingly dominating his bed with sexual frustrations. In the least seek guidance from trainer specializing in behavioral problems or obsessive traits. Good luck.

All breeds are different. Not sure if you have ever owned a schnauzer before but they only get a two out of 5 for trainability on the scale of dogs. You just have to take the time and have patience. With only scoring a 2 it make take up to 1-1 1/2 years to fully train. I own a beagle that only scores a 1 in trainability and it took me almost 2 years to train completely and now she is so sweet. Also, not all dogs like to be held. In fact most dogs don't like to be confined like that. He will calm down with time.

You should contact a dog trainer and see if you cant get their help. This is a problem for a trainer. They might have ideas for you that you wouldnt have thought of otherwise. Also walking is very good for a dog. You should start trying to walk him with him right by your side.

Hope that helps?
