I have sleep apnea and stop breathing when sleeping. I may take a long trip

Yes, you can. My husband has sleep apnea as well and always takes his with him. Your CPAP is considered a medical device and is NOT counted as a carry on. You are allowed to take the CPAP in addition to your two carry ons.

Make sure you but a reconginizable luggage tag on your case! Many CPAP cases are the same. My husband was on a flight with another passenger who had the same case as he did. The other guy accidently grabbed my husband's machine by mistake. Luckly the guy realized that it wasn't his and went to the gate agent with it. My husband was able to switch with the other guy and got his machine back. He now has a tag on the case so it won't happen again.
