A child's 18th birthday is crucial in his journey to adulthood since in many countries 18 is the qualifying age for voting and acquiring a driving license.
I would suggest you buy him a good wrist-watch to keep time. Time is the real substance of which our lives are made.
And if you are good at writing, write out for him your 'commandments' for life. Think well about and inspiring and enduring message. Words are living things ...
You could find an engraver to etch out this message on an enduring material like brass. Or, it could be handwritten by an artist and framed to be hung on a wall or placed on a writing desk.

***Ideas so that he's enjoying his own "party" ***
Tickets to a hot new movie for him and a few friends
Tickets to a local concert coming up that you think he'd like
Gift certificates for laser tag or paintball places
***Other ideas***
Something cool and creative toward college (which I assume is next year)... laptop accessories, iPod, that sort of technology. Tech toys are quite popular with the young adult crowd.
Gift certificates to the local mall are always in fashion for young adults, if you get absolutely stuck

Your son is an adult and a man, give him a gift that reflects that. GMUDE 2000's watch idea is very good, but get a nice one Citizen, Sieko etc.
