Autumn and Spring are wonderful times to visit. The Winter is too cold and it could be snowy or icy and dangerous to walk - you would be all bundled up in a heavy coat, sweater, scarf, hat and gloves - then, you go into a store where the temperature is 80 degrees and you have no place to store your coat, hat, gloves, etc. - it's so uncomfortable. Then, you go back into the freezing street. Summers in New York are horrible - it's hot and humid, there is no air ciculating between the buildings, the heat bounces up off the pavement and hot sweaty people are pushed together . The Spring is lovely, flowers are blooming and the temperatures are warm and comfortable. My favorite season is Autumn - the temperatures are comfotable, the leaves are starting to change colors (Central Park is so beautiful when the foliage changes). The weather is perfect for long walks - you can take a train into Brooklyn and walk back to Manhattan across the Brooklyn Bridge - an incredible view of the skyline, especially at sunset. And, the kids are off the streets and back in school. If you are here for Halloween, New York has the best Halloween parade. Also, Christmas time, the hotel rates are up, the theatres and restaurants and tourist attractions are so crowded, there are many places you can't get into.
Visit in the Fall or Spring - you'll have a great time!

The end of May is really nice. It's not a peak tourist time so flights and accommodations may be cheaper and the weather is nice. I wouldn't recommend the end of summer though (end of Aug/early Sept.). It can be extremely humid.

March can be iffy... April to June is nice.

September to December is also nice. Even if Dec winds up on the cold side, midtown for the Christmas season is a-MAZ-ing!
