There could be many reasons. I had to buy a new bed to be able to sleep thru the night. A good mattress is more important that you might think. I also have the problem of not being able to fall asleep because so many thoughts are going in my mind. So I have to turn on a tv or radio really low, just enough to hear it but not understand, it to distract me so I can fall asleep. Or you can try Tylenol PM. My aunt swears by it. Avoid stress and relax.

Firstly go and see your GP. They will talk to you about the problem and suggest ways to help and will probably prescribe a mild antidepressant which also works as a sleeping aide.

I had these when I didnt sleep due to a sudden death in the family and they really worked. Usually prolems with sleeping is because you have something on your mind even if you dont know what it is!!!

The doctor should also give you ways to help you relax at night in order to prepare your body for sleep. A good way is not to eat late ( not after 6pm ) dont drink any caffiene after 12 noon. Read instead of watching tv etc.
Warm baths with relaxing oils will also help.

Good luck and all the best

First try eliminating caffeine and doing something to relax before going to bed. If you've tried everything without success, and you don't mind taking medication, I'd recommend Sonata. You need a Rx for it; it provides 3-4 hrs. of sleep with no drowsiness whatsoever. My doc said it's the best because a lot of the other prescription sleep meds last longer, therefore, you might be drowsy for a while after waking. Also, if you can't sleep at 3am and have to get up by 6 or 7, you can't take the longer lasting meds. With Sonata, you're not aware you've taken anything.

You want to get some help with sleeping aids fast! Reading knocks me right out, and exercise helps a lot, especially out in the fresh air. A lot of people don't know this, but you can actually cause yourself some real mind problems from lack of sleep. Native Americans used to keep themselves awake for a long time in order to have visions and things. I had my first baby, and didn't know a thing about newborns. Was paranoid about him dying of crib death, and wanted to be a good mom. Well, it was a difficult birth to begin with, then I didn't sleep while he did. My lack of sleep finally made me start losing it. I ended up locked up in the hospital's mental health unit on medication for a couple of weeks till I got the rest I needed.
The bad thing is, it can turn a mentally healthy person unhealthy! Ask the doc for some mild tranquilizers, and find out what your real problem is.

I think you should see a doctor. Did anything traumatic happen? Is something bothering you? Are you nervous about something....Sometimes when people dont sleep for long periods of time, they may be diagnosed as being bipolar. When in the manic state, bipolar patients can stay up for days. Are you even tired w/o this sleep, or is it like you have endless energy? Perhaps you should keep a journal until you see the doctor & write down things you feel, whats going thru your mind...Good Luck

You should see a doctor to determine the cause of your insomnia if at all possible. You may need a prescription drug to take for a short period of time just to get your sleep patterns back to normal.

If you want to try over the counter stuff, get Benadryl. It has the exact same ingredients as non-prescription sleeping pills but it's cheaper. This may make you drowsy enough to be able to fall asleep. Take it with a cup of warm milk or hot cereal about a half hour before bedtime. Sometimes reading a book will relax you enough to fall asleep as well.

I know how you feel. I was put onto a over the counter product called restavit, it is only meant to be used short term, and really does help get your body clock ticking again. I also try to switch of all thoughts when I go to bed, cos there is nothing I can do about anything in the middle of the night. I avoid any stimulus when I am winding down, loud music, comp, tv and ensure that my bedroom is a nice quiet environment. A nice shower before bed, and fresh clean sheets also aid a good nights sleep

You should see your doctor, they can run test, a sleep study to see whats going on at night when you try to fall asleep or stay asleep, and then evaluate weather a sleep aid would be helpful in your case, or something else.
Lots of things could be contributing to your sleep problem. A lot of it can do with your routine also. And if you've taken any medication that makes you drowsy, if you've quit that medication sometimes its a real struggle to be able to fall asleep with out it. Of corse pain could be another contribuitor alot of things. Work with your doctor on this one, if you haven't slept in a long time you really need to seek out professional help.

i have had this problem many times before. if you aren't getting to sleep on time, try reading a book. i always fall asleep with a book on my chest! but if that doesn't work, talk to your doctor if it is really serious. but otherwise, get a few good books to read at night! (just don't get scary stories or something like that. then you'll never get to sleep!)

It could be that you are depressed or too stressed. If it's not it could be a sleep apnia and you should get a medical evaluation. If you don't like that try working out and really wearing yourself out before going to sleep. Or you could try drinking some benadryl pills.
