I do not have any personal experience about it, although I've heard the same things you have.

However, when I began researching cat nutrition (due to my little piglet), I came across a link to the very best canned foods out there.

In short, they contain little or no grains, and have actual meat in them instead of byproducts.

I highly recommend switching to any of these. I personally am feeding Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea. Although this brand is noted as being rather high in carbs, it's still a 100% improvement over what they HAD been eating.

EDIT: One of the most surprising things I've learned (and there have been a few) is that vets are NOT necessarily the experts on what to feed cats. That sounds completely nuts, but it's true. Now that I'm a self-described expert in the area, I can see that any vet who recommends dry food or a brand that is chock full of grains, byproduct and meal surely doesn't know what he or she is talking about. Which is why I'm changing to a vet who not only specializes in cats, but actually knows a little something on this topic.

SD is not a great food. It's really no better than any super market food; it just costs a lot more. When buying a cat food, look at the list of ingredients. If it contains corn, wheat products, and animal by-products, it is not a high quality food.

Look for foods that contain mostly meat (dry food looks for a meat meal, such as chicken meal). Innova, Felidae, Natural Balance are all great quality foods. There are a lot more out there, you just have to do some research because they don't advertise.

I don't have any personal experience of Science Diet canned food because it is something I would never buy for my cats. SD uses by-product meat in both dry and canned foods and that is not a wholesome meat protein for your cat.

Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Wellness, Innova, Lick Your Chops are all canned foods that use wholesome meat and they are less if not the same price as the SD.

I am 100% with runeamok and I am taking it the next step. my cats eat only felines pride, a raw meat diet designed especially for the nutritional needs of cats. you should do some research on this yourself and you will see that what rune says is true. vets are not necessarily uptodate on the latest in cat nutrition. dry food has been associated with diabetes and urinary tract problems. it is pure junk. Mother Nature did not give your cat those sharp little teeth so he could eat dried up pieces of garbage from the slaughterhouse floor.

I've used Hill's Prescription food for a few months. My cat didn't like it that much so I fed her the alternative prescription canned food instead, Medi-Cal. Both are crap though. They have by-products in it which isn't good, especially since the price tag is so high, I'd expect good quality ingredients.

Science Diet is absolutely garbage food.
My Vet told me to feed my sick cat that brand and she got worse.
I decided to try another brand Purina Naturals, it has more protein that the other brands I have access to.
She is much better since changing to the Perinea brand and has gained weight and her youthful energy.
Hope this helps.

All canned pet food is made out of stuff people won't eat, and is garbage. Don't feed any canned food. I keep my cats' dish full of dry food all the time, and give them a moderate amount of some meat dish -- chicken liver, kidney, boiled chicken, non-oil packed tuna, etc. -- once a day. They are all in excellent health and condition.
