A hypotonic fluid has a lower concentration of electrolytes and carbohydrates than your body does. Water, for example is a hypotonic fluid.

An isotonic fluid has the same concentration of these substances as your body does. (or should) Gatorade is designed to be isotonic.

Which one you need depends on the activity you're engaged in. If you're doing a light workout, like walking, biking, or a short run, hypotonic will be fine. If you're working out very hard or for a very long time, you may shed some electrolytes and need some carbs, so then you would go with an isotonic sports drink to replace those.

Hope that helps. :)
