In my opinion, large hydroelectric dams can have adverse effects on the area's eco-system by its destruction of flora and fauna as well as alterations in the prevailing climatic conditions. People living in catchment areas are invariablly adversely affected through loss of arable land, occupation and livelihood. Small hydrodams which do not take up much valuable land space may be more preferable.
For your project, you may look up sites on the Internet for the pros and cons by typing "Hydroelectric dams" into any search engin. You definitely have an interesting project before you and I wish you all the best.

Totally agree with Paleologus, you might as well look up long term adverse effects of river hydroelectric dams. When you raise the river level in order to produce electricity, its banks start to erode in time and the river goes shallow. This happened to middle area of river Volga twenty years after the hydroelectric dam installation, where in order to allow ships to pass now sometimes they have to dig out the sand that has eroded from the banks into the river.
