Podcasts are NOT exclusive to iTunes. I don't know why so many people think this. In my opinion, iTunes advertises the worst podcasts and has a very unfair ranking system. They also favor corporate sponsored over independent which is very unfair.
They clearly cater to users who don't know how to run a computer and don't allow you to control what you download well enough.
You can use any number of programs to download a podcast. I've tried a few but keep going back to Juice http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/
It's an excellent program, very simple layout and easy to use.
Check out http://www.podcastalley.com for a huge collection.
Personally my favorites are:

http://www.myextralife.com -video games/movies/tv/scifi
http://www.pcgamerpodcast.com -pc gaming
http://www.nobodylikesonions.com -adult language

If something has a podcast they'll have an XML link to subscribe, just copy that into the "podcast directory" bar, click "add" and you're all set.
Once new episodes are downloaded, you can just right click them and click on "play in media player"

I'm not sure what your question is. Podcasts are video or audio uploaded by radio stations, TV networks or just random people. You can download them using iTunes and play them on your computer or your iPod.

You can download iTunes for free and most of the podcasts are free as well. You can get anything from the latest news to vintage cartoons all for free. Just go to iTunes music store online and click on podcasts.
