I like to use nero. You can do a whole image backup of your hard drive onto dvd, or just certain files. And the restore process is easy, you just pop in the dvd you burned to and boot the pc, and it installs the files back to where they should be......
I did a fresh install of XP, installed all programs and updates, then did a complete backup of my hard drive, so if I ever need to reinstall windows, I just pop in the dvd, and im off, a fresh install with all my programs and updates ready to go. You can then set nero to do incremental backups on other files, like your my documents folder, say to an external hard drive, I love nero!

There are two methods of backing up form a PC.
1. CD or DVD ROM or Internal or
2. External Hard drive.
Internal hard drive is not portable. External is portable but more expensive than CD or DVD.
CD or DVD are cheaper and portable but are less reliable than hard drive.

I like to use DVDs but not all computers will allow you to do this. You can use a small external or internal hard drive as a recovery drive if you don't have that option.
