In North America, it is illegal to pass on the right. When four lane highways come into question, the same rule applies. Slower vehicles are expected to stay to the right so quicker drivers can pass safely (and legally) on the left.
Hope this helps.

Aisha ... I believe this became the practice because most entrances and exits from high-speed thoroughfares are on the right side of the roadway. Since the exits are there, naturally, people will be slowing down as they approach the exit they're intending to use. Likewise, if someone just got onto the highway from an entrance, chances are they need a little time to accelerate and get up to normal cruising speed.
These are the reasons, I believe, we use the right for driving a little slowly.
By the way ... In countries that drive on the left such as the U.K. and Japan, I wonder if their slow lane (if they have one) is on the left.
Great question, Aisha.

While driving your car, the right lane is the SLOW lane for the respect of those that need to go faster, or to pass the slower driver.
:) PS, love those slow drivers that stay in the right lane!!
