Acne is caused when over activity of the skin's oil glands leads to plugged pores and the outbreak of lesions, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, a branch of the National Institutes of Health's Department of Health and Human Services.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that the acne skin condition afflicts as many as 50 million Americans. Most common in adolescents and young adults, acne affects people of all ages and races.

Lack of vitamins in your diet, mensration, poor hygene or allergies. When I had acne I ate plenty of fruit and vegetables, as well as only applying lotions that had been prescribed by my doctor, and other products may cause a reaction. I also made sure to use a clean towel to dry my face every time I washed it not just the towel hanging up in the bathroom! That and a hormone tablet and it soon cleared up!!

You have to attack acne where it starts, with your diet. For me, diet was the cause and solution. Topical medications fight the symptoms. Start by eliminating trans fats and eating more fruits and vegetables. Once you start cleaning up the inside of your body, by eating properly, the outside of your body (your skin) will be get cleaned up too. I started a website to document my problem and solution.

You might find it helpful to read my story. Just remember to eat an all natural/organic diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Stay away from processed foods. Use mild, all natural cleansers and don't pick at your face. Get lots of sleep and enough water for your body weight. Remember, clean body = clean skin. While you're waiting for your skin to clear, remind yourself that acne is a challenge that you will overcome soon. Once you're rid of it, tell all your friends how you did it. That's what I'm doing. God Bless.

Acne outbreaks are caused by the four "trigger factors": excess oil, pore-clogging dead skin cells, acne bacteria and inflammation. Hormones prompt your oil glands to produce excess oil, provoking the skin cells in your pores to rapidly shed. When the pore becomes clogged by trapped oil and dead skin cells it creates a perfect breeding ground for irritating acne bacteria. As your skin tries to deal with the bacteria, it becomes inflamed, eventually causing a full-blown breakout.

Stress is usually #1 reason. Hormones, weather, especially the sun, different irritants on the skin (makeup, shampoo, etc..) certain medicines. There are so many reasons and they are different for everyone.
