People need community, that's true. Check out your town for atheist or humanist organizations, or branches of national organizations such as American Atheists. Don't sign up for the first one you find; try to meet some of the people first. Such groups often have free public lectures and debates on a wide variety of topics; college campuses are a good place to find them.

I think an atheist church is a good idea, a place where people discuss moral and ethical questions and provide support for each other. You might try a Unitarian Universalist church. Many UUs are atheists. See uua.org to learn more. There's a box on the right where you can find a congregation near you. Also try a humanist group and see what is more congenial to you.

There is no religious freedom for non-believers. The news media never mentions them even though they are growing in number. Try opening up an atheist based school and the peace loving religious fanatics would burn it down. I have never personally had the urge to hear a speech. If I did there are lots of them on TV. If I feel the need to sing a song.I can always take a shower or go to a community center for seniors or a local tavern.

School is mostly humanist understanding. Religion has nothing to do with school now, many religious people would like to pull their children out of school. If you ask me schools for the most part are secularism, that's what it pushes. Separation of church and state makes it so. But really that is the beauty of it, to think the parents have responsibilities to raise their children and explain different things to them so they can understand it from a reasonable state within their own beliefs that the family may hold, however things are being forced on children.
Anyways, churches are like AA meetings, pity feast, or to be a place where people can come together and be able to gain strength from their carnal addictions to culture, or self defeating doctrine, so if Atheist want to create a platform where the quagmire of their conditions are exposed go for it. Atheist need AA meetings too.
BTW - communities are good. they are not churches. Churches is a bad, terrible example, because a church from spiritual esoteric understanding is a shadow of the real thing, that is within.

Atheism is simply the absence of religious belief, so there's not really much common ground there for such an organisation. On the other hand, if you want to support a positive non-religious worldview or belief system, such as humanism for example, then I think an institution of the kind you described would be a good idea.

I'm an Atheist and I'm 24, and I live in Australia, I don't
think you need a church to promote positive values
instead we should have a BBQ on the beach or at a
fresh water swimming hole like a party, celebration with
heaps of alcohol, music and yummy food ....

this is the problem. lots of atheists feel a *need* to organize against the God Delusion and its threat to destroy the planet. But, by nature, atheists tend to be independent and not "joiners". It's a dilemma.
I myself have considered joining atheist societies, but have always backed out at the last minute. The independence of thought is one of the things I really love about not having a religion.

Why don't you realize your idea? You may start with a small group of people, but who knows it will be a big organization with a lot of branches. You may become the leader (not the priest of course) and you can be a welknown succesful person.

The ACLU is a temple you know? Some criminal defence lawyers would make good priests too. Some of those on death-row could be your martyrs.Richard Dawkins could be High priest. You could also use some of John Lenon's songs for hymns.
