I have two cats that I love so much. I am a telecommunications installer and I just accepted a huge promotion which has me traveling for two months across several states. I don't have anyone to watch my two cats so I have to take them with me. I will be driving the whole way and staying in hotels. I am just so worried that this is impossible!!! I love my cats so much but I have to take this job opportunity. Any suggestions or advice???

It will be difficult. You'll have to make sure you find hotels that allow pets - and even those often require that you don't leave the animals alone in the room outside their carrier... Also, most cats are not fond of traveling,t hough some take to it quite well. There's also the risk that a cat might get away from you somehow - in a completely unfamiliar area, he/she would likely never find his/her way back...

Are you going to always be traveling form now on, or is it just the two months? If the latter, you could either get a professional pet sitter (who would go to your place every day and feed the cats, play with them, and clean their box, plus take them to the vet if needed.), or board the cats in a kennel. (This would be cheaper than a sitter, but the cats would not be in their familiar environment.)

You should be able to find both in the yellow pages. Also, your vet might be able to recommend someone. Some vets even have boarding kennels themselves. Shelters also often board pets, and are likely to have addresses of sitters and kennels in your area.

I'm not saying traveling with them would be impossible - but it would be very difficult, and really stressful for them (and you). Paying to have them looked after is probably the easier and safer solution.

Only you can answer this question. I have travelled about with one cat but she has been bought up to feel safe and secure in a fairly large cat carry cage. Her temperament is in the skittish range but she does not stray far from me or my caravan.

Generally cats are not good with travel, but there are exceptions to the rule. Temperament will play a big factor. It will also depend on housing arrangements and time frames, cats generally like stability you will have a better chance of making a go of it if you can find a way to ensure something always remains the same and familiar(the caravan & carry cage+me, in my case, my cat was actually born in the carry cage).

You might also want to keep in mind that when moving cats to another location they are best kept in for 3 to 5 days as they have a tendancy to try and return to their former residence.

Good luck with the job and the cats!!!

From personal experience I think you'll be fine as long as you have well behaved kitties. I just got back from a month and a half vacay and took my three with me. They just curled up in their little spots while on the road and chilled in the hotel rooms while site seeing. If you know in advance where you are gonna be try to check the hotels in the area to make sure they accept pets and ifso deposits, weight restrictions, and multiple pets. That was the biggest problem I had. The Ramada, Days Inn and Holiday Inn Express were the ones I have the best luck with. Good luck and have a safe trip! ~Meg

Please make sure and buy very good carriers since you will be bringing them in and out so often. I have had customers come to drop off cats for boarding and they had the cat in a cheap carrier and the clip was forced up and unlatch when she put it in the car and when she picked up the carrier the bottom came right off. The cat took off and she could not find right as she was getting ready to go on a trip of a life time. Luckily late at night she came back to our facility when things got quiet and he was hiding under a car in the lot. Please check out this webpage with pictures on how to make cheap carrier safe or buy new ones with BOLTS.

i have 2 cats also, & facing the similar dilemma, i hope mine are close enough to each other to spend closed quarters together-in the crate-not in the room. they need space to breathe!!!!at least make sure they get out of the crate 4 hours or more!!!

I think S has the right idea. I also think your cats would be very unhappy with all the travelling.

I think it is not safe because they need to have space but if you stop every now and then and let them walk maybe
