I think he saw the front of a cat and invented cats eyes. If he saw the back of the cat instead, we would have pencil sharpeners fitted in the road.

One foggy night, Percy Shaw was driving home along a dangerous road, when a cat sitting on a fence saved him from going over a cliff. The cat's eyes reflected Percy's headlights.

Percy had a brainwave. He would invent reflecting 'Cat's Eyes' that would be put on all roads. He spent years working on his idea, but when it was completed no one was really interested. However Percy did not lose heart . . . he waited and in 1937 the British Government ran a competition to find the best road reflector . . . Percy's 'Cat's Eyes' won.

Percy Shaw was awarded an O.B.E. He also found fame and fortune in his lifetime - not bad for a lad who left school when he was only 13. Since that day millions and millions of Cat's Eyes have been sold. They are used on roads all over the world. Though Percy Shaw became a millionaire he lived all his life in the same house near Halifax in Yorkshire.

Percy Shaw invented them and although he made millions it didn't change him. His house had little furniture but he had a woman to cook for him. He had crates of brown ale in the living room and he and his mates sat and watched TV whilst drinking. A man after my own heart.
