My friends thinks his dog might have joint pains or hip dysplasia who knows... the dog has an appointment tomorrow for x-rays, it all started when the dog was limping out of the blue about 4months ago then it will go and come back then wouldn’t get up and was struggling to do anything, but then they took it to the vet they gave him pain killers for the dog they didn’t do a x-ray at the time cause the vet said to see how he goes on the pain killers and if there’s no signs of improvement then to bring him in but the dog was better within a day running around so no need to go vet or take the tablets anymore, but now 4months later my friend said his dog wont move its in pain but then moves again like nothing happen but still struggles to pick stuff off the floor (could be neck pain) and when I seen the dog today it looked fine but looked pretty stiff at the back legs and front

SORRY the dog is a Rottweiler its around a year old still a puppy I’m worried cause I have the same breed of dog just a bit younger and my friends place has a lot of cement in his back yard and so does my place so I hope its not cause of the hard surface thats why i asked a question about cement and a dog spending some time on it, but doubt it could be a lot of people have told me Rottweilers spend a lot of there lives on hard surfaces/cement, working as guard dogs at car yards just as long as he has a comfy place to rest on he should be fine

Rottweilers are one of the most likely breeds to have bone and hip problems. As puppies they grow at astonishing rates, and most puppy foods are high in protien, which cause them to grow faster, putting more stress on the bones. Particularly hip bones. It could also be heart problems which are also prevalent in rotties and can cause quite a bit of chest pain, restricting movement. Sounds more like hip or joint pain. I would recommend glucosamine sulphate tablets bought from a chemist and dosaged at an adult human rate. It helps with pain, swelling and future joint wear and tear if used constantly. Trust me, i am 27 and have bad arthritis and take those tablets, plus my 3 larger dogs all get them daily as a preventative measure for bone and hip pain later in life.

You did not say how old the dog is? Dogs do get arthritis in their joints and spine just like us. Or perhaps it is a pinched nerve that gets inflamed every so often causing pain. I would get it to the vet for x-rays and treatment. Sounds like it is in pain - even if it is coming and going. Maybe it needs to stay on the meds.

The age of the dog, and it's breed have a bearing on the problem.
If it's an Alsatian (German Shepherd) it could be a hereditary disorder that is incurable.
In an older dog (and remember that a dog is old at 12 years old - a 15 year old dog is like a person at 100 years old), it could be old age and a combination of many things.
I suggest let the vet take his xrays and accept his expert opinion.

I have a chocolate lab who started showing signs like that.A few days he would be stiff in back end and then be fine for awhile.I took him to vet--He has hip dysplasia so it very well could be that.My dog is on pain meds cost 100.00 a month. But I know he has a lot more life in him so its worth it.I hope your friends dog will be OK.

If he's a hyper, clumsy pup he may be banging himself around when frolicking. I've had that problem with my elkhound,he'd go into one of his crazed runs and then go skidding into walls,cabinets,etc... winding up pulling a muscle or getting bruised up. He's been so banged up that we feared dysplasia too but x-rays and scans showed healthy joints,he just knocked himself senseless.
It's good that he's getting x-rayed though,if its dysplasia or a spine problem he can be treated for it now, while still young.

poor doggy.. if only animals can talk, so they can really tell us how they feel.. it sounds like the dog might have arthritis. i hope it isn't serious. i'm glad the vet finally decided to do xrays. at least the doctor will know for sure. let's hope it isn't serious..

Lyme disease can also cause this kind of problem. If the dog hasn't been tested for it then it should be.
