I have to write a 5 page essay that supports arranged marriages. Any history of when or who it worked for? How about now? Is is still practiced?

That's a toughie. But here goes.
It is assumed (perhaps with good reason) that parents have the rare innate ability to perceive their children like nobody else ever can. This is not a myth I should think. You can find umpteen reasons for substantiating this belief. I won't go into that.

Notice how parents oftentimes give their children names that accord well with their personality and character? I've noticed this in India and even in South Africa.

So, knowing their children so well naturally gives them the advantage of understanding what sort of partner would suit their offspring. Eg: if the daughter is shy and retiring and needs TLC, then a man who displays signs of that talent (or is known for that talent) is chosen.

Ah, you'lll want to know, how do parents know the talent of the man they're choosing for their shy and retiring daughter? They consult others about the person they wish to target for their daughter. This is not as absurd as it may seem for their are professional cadres of people whose job it is to know intimate details about marriagable men and women in their community. Consulting them is sine qua non....and a hefty price has to be paid for their service. Call them informed gossip-mongers who perform an essential social service in their community. And of course they check out the family of the prospective spouse.

Be mindful of the fact that such a system develops keen insights into how to view others which other societies lack. Its a learned response, uncanny in so many ways, bizarre in others. You have to experience it to understand it and see how it works. But a word of caution: it is not a fail safe system. In many ways the exhange of commodities as bride price has severely undermined the system and has led to all sorts of abuses...like bride-burning.
Check that on the web. The Indian government has now come down hard on bride-burning.

Of course, I think that the practice of arranged marriages goes well with traditional society which modern persons will reject, refuse and condemn. They have their reasons for wanting an end to the notion that parents know best for them - as if they know themselves better? think about it?

Talk to Indian people about these things and put forward the above thesis to gauge their views. You will have an excellent thesis to write. Do mail me a copy because I have an abiding concern with this subject as well.

good wishes.
Virtrava.
PS.Sure it istill practised. There are 'modern' men and women who trust their parents' choice more than they would want to believe in theirs.

Arranged marriages are practiced to this day in most communities in India. The reason being girls and boys of marriagiable age are not very much encouraged to socialize on their own. Parents feel that because their children have always minded their own business like studies and sports and were not allowed to socialize with the opposite sex, donot know who would make a good spouse.

Another reason is that most communities have strong faith in astrology and would not want to risk (according to them) marrying a person who would not bring in good into their lives.

Wealth is another major reason. People donot want somebody who they think is unfit to possess their wealth and run their establishments. They want equals. They want people who have similar backgrounds so that they can merge their wealths and create synergy with more wealthy people. Princes marry princesses, not maids.

arranged marriages worked for wealthy families and royalty. there was the old rule that royals can only marry royals. marriages were arranged to increase wealth, status and as well as to keep peace or open trading between two nations.

for wealthy families, there were arranged marriages to increase the wealth and status of the family. it was considered a big thing when to big money families were joined by a marriage.
