She is having an informal party with mostly her friends and only my husband and I and her father and his girlfriend. She doesnt want us to stick around too long but we want to make at least a small speech even though her close friends are making speeches. What can I say as her Mother without embarassing her and keeping it short and sweet? I am not sure what her Dad will be saying.

My daughter was 21 last week, and her Dad and his wife, and me and my Husband all got together and took her for a meal. That way, we too could celebrate her milestone birthday, and she still had a great time with her friends on a separate occasion. We kept the sentiments to a minimum - (especially before we'd had a few glasses of wine!!) - but still said how proud we were of her, and how much we loved her.
It's her day after all, and she's an adult now so she should choose how she wants to spend it, and who with. Make the most of your time with her, then gently butt out and leave the young ones to it...you could always go on to somewhere else yourselves and celebrate it in your own way. Have fun....

Are you still on good terms with her Dad? If so, how about doing a little speech together - I'm sure your daughter would appreciate it if you could both do that for her? Just say something like how you've enjoyed watching her grow up into what she is today, how proud you are of her etc. You probably don't want to get too sentimental as it will embarrass her and might make you emotional. Enjoy...

Say "Children we will live the area A.S.A.P., have fun!". That is short and accurate!
