Why does pinching your nose when you eat/drinking something affect your taste?

When you eat food, there are two senses that play a role in how your food tastes... One is your tongue, and the other is your olfactory sense, in your nose.

This is the same reason why, when you have a cold, your food tastes different.

So if you eat an apple or an onion (while holding your nose) both the apple and the onion will taste the same (since you cannot smell the difference).
