Yes we do but it should only be used as a last resort- until you find work or your circumstances change.
I was receiving fortnightly payments and was not able to cancel my payments when I found work, I had to keep handing in forms and even though I worked 3 jobs and only received $30 payment a fortnight I still had to do compulsory volunteer work (Work for the Dole), so some of the conditions are quite strict and you would benefit more from actually working a regular job.

** Australians (including myself, even though I received it) don't think very highly of people who receive government benefits, so just be aware of that factor first :)

Yeah, there is different ones for different people, student one, over 25 students, people looking for work, mums, etc.

But the conditions can be strict eg. have to show you are looking for work every week if you are just unemployed with no kids. We used to have the "work for the dole" program where people did some work to get up skills while getting the dole but they just scrapped it, cos they thought it was too easy to stay on.

A lot of people have had problems with centrelink that I know eg forms not being sent out and stuff. And its really not that much money anyway, most people would prefer to find work.
