did it about 20 years ago.

it's really hard.
i had to learn a new language and the culture was different.
it's exhausting for the first couple of years
and then they just wear you down and you go on antidepressants and then you move back home.
just kidding.

But it is exhausting at first. Some people can't learn the language which is very hard.
you discover why they really put that picture of a strawberry on the jam jar label-for those of us who can't read!
just the other day there was a lady in the store asking me to read her a package label because she couldn'tfigure out what it said.
Of course , i should talk. I just bought a econ pack of TPaper with Vanilla scent, YUK, because I couldn't read the label correctly!

the other thing is not having any roots. My life here starts in 1986 and I have no family here except my husband and his family(yikes--in-laws are FAMILY too) and my children.
And you have to make all new friends.
I've only seen my only brother once in 21 yrs.
I wasn't at his wedding. He wasn't at mine.
Birthdays, holidays, vacations all that is hard if not impossible to do together.
Now with computers we're all in touch more, but you're really cut off in any case. Well, it depends how far away you are, I"m a full days air travel from my family.

it's an adventure. you'll live a more interesting life for a while and then if you adjust to the new culture, you'll just have a life!

You should read up on Culture shock before you decide and visit the place you want to live in couple of times or for an extended period before you decide. I was here for 6 months before I came permanently. I also married a local which sorta helps. And I studied languages and culture in college and read and read and read.

all that said!---
i wouldn't move back to the US for all the tea in china.

And I live in israel, too! not an easy place to live.

I have been relocating every few years, with my parents, my whole life.

There are definate advantages to moving to different countries. It most definately boradens your perspectives, and allows you to learn new languages.

It was not until we moved to the states that I learnt to speak English.

Depdning on your eligability (age, mainly, nationality can play a role too) you can apply to be an exchange student (Ages under 20) or an Au pair (ages above 20) to experience a different culture, with very good support systems in place already to be sure to 'catch you if you fall', and just make the adaption a little bit easier.

Do some research into the countries you could see yourself living in, find out abotu the facts, then phone up some organisations that can help you Au Pair or go on a cultural exchange, and perhaps make an informative interview appointment with them. They will be able to tell you about how people from all over the world have come to terms with living in your home town, and often, you may expect the same difficulties and advantages when going abroad. If you want any help in this regard, feel free to contact me, Ive been on an exchange. My country of choice was France.

Worth it or not: I wouldnt trade the experiences I have had for anything in the workd

Two thumbs up.

I have and did. I moved to Southeast Asia 18 months ago. It is not a matter of giving up anything in the USA. NO matter where I hang my hat, I am and always will be an American.

You live where you are most comfortable. There are not many places in the US that can compare with the cost of living in Asia. Here I have great weather most of the year, great people, fantastic food and many things to see and do. The cost of living here is much less than in most places in the USA and in spite of the decline of the dollar to many foreign currencies in the last year, my dollars go further here than in the US. For the record, I also keep a small apartment in the US that I can go to anytime I want.

It has worked out well for me as I was first here in 1970 while in the military. I fell in love with the place but did not realize it until I returned for the first time in 30 years 6 years ago. It was then it dawned on me how much I really missed this place. I feel like I was destined to be here.

Yes I have considered relocating from the US to another country. On my end it isn't worth it and no it will not work out. If you think long and hard about it your networks are in the US if this is where you were brought up. Your life and future are deplicted upon who you know and what you know and if the who you knows' are not in another country with you then think about it... How far will you get? You have to start over. Might as well come out of someother womans womb again and start fresh because you come out not knowin' a soul but the one who was your creator. That may sound like enough but HE%% no. My boyfriend wants to flee to another state due to nothin' bein' here for him, but it's another thing comin' if he has to start over with no one to trust nor no one he knows. Yeah I'm suppose to be with him but that's just two lost souls not knowin' shyt about anyone or really anything but what you know from another country. That's like those foreigner who get over here THINKING they know shyt but truly don't and f*ck up as soon as they get here. But the best thing I can say is just to visit other countries and try to get accustom and know folk there before you move there and settle in.

I've considered relocating myself and my future family to Canada because of the way politics work and everything is so much better i.e. local government, universal health care, strict environmental policies, lower crime rate, strict sex offender policies, more liberal. Society seems much better there than here.

In spite of all America's warts, I would never consider moving outside of the US. There has been a consideration about moving from the "Socialist Republic of California" though.
