It can be important.
In general, most people can benefit from a college degree, - but some notes are as follows.
1. College degrees are racket, - when my daughter was born 19 yrs. ago, - I said by now, education will be a "commodity", sold over the internet. Colleges have high book costs, and lab materials, - all methods to just get more money.
2. 90% of what you do / learn in college has nothing to do with the 'real world'.
3. A lot of kids go to college, - only to drop out, - a 'waste' of time and money. I guess it only 'counts' if you finish.

I'm not a big fan of our education system either but here's the hook plain and simple. If you only have a high school diploma you will be paid for what your worth, it sounds crude but it's true. It's all I have and I'm eeking by day by day while I'm in college working two jumps which are physically demanding. Some people make millions from a dollar but if you want a guarantee of a better life go to college and get a degree it's simply the way it is. When you learn a skill or learn how to manage people and important aspects of a company you will be compensated for it and you will not get it without an education in your chosen field. So yes it's worth it no matter how much it stinks you can get the knowledge you feel your missing anytime the idea is to go through the motions and let it bring you success.

Yes, more now than ever. A high school diploma will not get you a decent paying job. In a lot of businesses now you have to have a bachelors degree just to be offered an entry level position. It is definitely a requirement to be successful, I'm not saying that you can't be successful without a college education, but it is a lot harder.

The only importance is that it can be the difference in getting or not getting a position or promotion when you are up against another equally qualified candidate; in those cases the one with the college degree will be selected because it looks better for public relations purposes and it allegely shows that the person had enough ambition enough to go to and complete college.

yes, a degree shows effort and work on your part. it is something that cannot be taken away from you. there are good colleges and mediocre ones so do your homework when it comes to where you want to attend.

It depends on what you want to do.
I hate American education...its pathetic in almost every regard. The public education system should be blown up.
