The international prefixes kilo and mega mean 1,000 and 1,000,000. But these are mis-used by the computer industry to mean 1024 and 1024 x 1024 which equals 1,048,576. So a kilobyte means 1024 bytes and a megabyte means 1024 kilobytes.
The reason for this is that computers use binary addressing internally and it is easier to make physical memories with 1024 spaces in them than ones with only 1000. As a result, memory sizes are always divided into large chunks which are powers of 2. A megabyte is 2 to the power of 20 bytes. A gigabyte is 2 to the power of 30 bytes. 512 MB, which is a common memory size for computers, is 2 to the power of 29.
In Hard disks, the size is determined by how much they can physically cram onto the disk so it is not so important to be a power of 2. Many manufacturers use the international standard of k = 1000, M = 1,000,000 etc because it makes their disks look bigger. A 200 GB drive sounds more impressive than a 187 GB drive, but 187 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 is actually slightly bigger than 200 billion bytes.

There's about 1000 bytes in a kilobyte, while there's 1000 kilobytes in a megabyte, while there's only 1000 mega bytes in a gigabyte.
Hope this helps!

As far as I know, from the OS point of view 1024 Kilo Bytes are equal to 1 Mega Byte.
And from the Hardware (Hard Disk) manufacturers point of view, 1000 Kilo Bytes are equal to 1 Mega Byte.
Due to this, you get 37.* GB space on 40 GB hard disk.
