Full Time Night Shift, College and Weight Loss... A losing battle?
Hi All,
Well... here's the deal. I am prone to weight gain. Always have been. If I don't eat very healthy and exercise daily I WILL gain weight... and fast. I currently work 40-65 hours a week (it varies) from 11:30pm-8:30pm and am going to college full time persuing my BA... so I don't have to keep up this job LOL. My job pays well and has very good benefits so I am reluctant to leave. Not to mention I support myself and have to keep the bills paid! However, I barely have time to study and fit in 5-6 hours of sleep... much less exercise. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips that may help me stay in shape? I am planning on taking the summer off so I can get back into shape, but the weight will only come back once school starts back up if I don't keep up the exercise. I need to lose about 40 pounds to be healthly. I know the night shift isn't helping at all but I slowly keep gaining weight. Help!!

hhm yea it is pretty tough to keep up with the exercise while working and going to school full-time. You can try doing things like climbing up the stairs instead of using the elevator... if you walk around alot then that can contribute alot to the weight loss..

drinking water instead of juice and soda pops can help since those are usually loaded with calories... although avoiding coffee maybe a good idea but it is okay to a have cup a day (go with regular or an expresso rather than cappacino or mocha). It's okay to drink some sweet like a Diet Snapple which contains Splenda instead of sugar (from what I've heard).

I would avoid eating a muffin from a shop (unless homemade) because they usually have trans fat and saturated fat. Suprisingly a donut has about 80 calories or more (less than a muffin).

Having 5 meals a day (including snacks between meals) is better than 3 meals or less, and it can increase your metabolism and help you lose weight faster.. so it is also important.

Having enough sleep is also important to maintain the metabolism otherwise it will decrease... so try to get as much sleep as possible.

If you have to time to stop by at gym, you can do a little bit of cardio and working with weights... don't necessarily have to be there for an hour or more... since walking can contribute to losing more calories... if you can do this like 5 times a week, you'll definately be able to maintain your weight better.

It's all about time management, but I do agree that it's hard at times.

Yes it all can co-exist. Make a list of your priorities. #1 should be exercise if it is only 15 minutes three times a week more if you can. Where I use to work we had a trail to walk and this is how I would fit it into my busy life, and I lost 60 lbs. If your metabolism is fast it will help take the weight off faster, my
metabolism crawls, so I have to work harder at it.

Okay....3,500 calories to burn one pound of fat
You keep a journal of your food intake..I think its highly important for you to see on paper the numbers of what you are taking in.

You buy a calorie counting watch..You take your total intake calories +3,500 add them together and THAT is what you need to burn everyday..to burn one pound.

If you start seeing the numbers I think it will help see that alot of what you might eat..may be uneccesary. You have to remember that your stomach and your intake of food at one meal sitting should be the size of your fist. It doesn't take much food to maintain your health. You can have 5 to 6 servings of healthy food the size of your fits over three regular huge meals. Your body is like a conveyer belt. You need a little at a time to keep everything moving. Good Luck
