Usually and engine will over heat because of a leak somewhere on you rad or hoses or heater core. or your fluid is low..or your water pump belt is missing..or waterpump is not working..or your thermostat is stuck closed and the water is not flowing..or in some cases you have an air lock "like a bubble" that is causing the liquide not to flow...if it's that just remove the cap and let the car run for a few minutes..if it's a small leak put a table spoon of black pepper in your reservoir..if it's the belt replace it..same with thermostat and water pump..there are no other reason's possilbe that would explain over heating..sorry

The most common reasons for overheating are as follows: Not enough air flow through the radiator or not enough coolant flow through the engine. Many things contribute to these effects so do a through check of the systems in question.

It could be a few of the following:

1.Coolant system has a leak
2.Air bubbles stuck in cooling system causing hot spots
3.thermostat stuck shut
4.coolant pump not circulating coolant
5.radiator clogged or too small
6.fan clutch siezed increasing load on motor
7.electric fans not sufficient
8.electric fan temp sensors/relay not working
9.reclaim tank is leaking or lacks coolant this will cause #2
10.Ign timing too advanced causing engine to run hotter
11.cyl head gaskets not oriented right, coolant passages blocked
12.radiator cap wornout, get a new one with stock PSI rating
13.using AC on hot day and running up steep hill or stop and go traffic
14. Running your engine too lean will also cause an overheating engine

not checking the coolant level and changing the coolant - the coolant will lose its anti-corrosive properties over time and become contaminated with scale and deposits. The radiator and reservoir should be drained, refilled, and burped. The owner's manual tells you how often the coolant should be replaced.
