True, the tree roots help protect the soil from erosion ... a MAJOR problem in India and Pakistan due to heavy rains flowing out of the Himalayan Mountains and foothills causing frequent floods. It is one of the root causes of under development in those regions. I don't know exactly how urban areas in India are developed, so I have no definite answer for that case.

In urban areas in North America large quantities of land in urban areas is covered with asphalt and concrete. So the only way to increase the green cover is to plant gardens on flat rooftops.

But that doesn't help flooding.

Tree cover area can be increased if children participate in this exercise. In schools planting of trees should be made a part of home work. Each home can have a few trees or bushes. It depends upon where one is living and how much of space is left for plantation of trees. There are ecofriendly trees. The emphasis should be on growing them. Certain trees like amaltas, and gulmohar should also be grown as they bloom into bunches of yellow and red, respectively. Planting of trees should be done according to soil condition. There is no reason why tree cover cannot be increased. This is one thing does not require much effort. All one has to do is go the nursery and get plants and plant them and take care of them. Trees do not belong to NGO or the government. They belong to all. Hence, it should be the mission of all to plant trees and protect them.

Yes your are right, we need to increase tree cover that will not only improve ground water levels but also give us fresh air and trees act as home for so many insects and birds.

We need to improve tree cover and for this we should get some areas designated as green belt which will become our cities lungs in coming time. This green belt will also act as catchment for water.

We should encourage people to plant a tree every year on their birthdays or anniversaries. This can be done for our loved once also. We need to keep in mind that our work does not end just by planting a sapling but we should see to it that it becomes a full grown tree and becomes useful for all. For this we will have to give it protection.

We should try to create awareness amongst people and ask them to not to cut trees.

You can form a group along with any concerned friends you can find and call it the Green Tree group. Start by creating awareness by writing to the editors of newspapers. When you start to get the general support of the people, you can undertake mass tree planting campaigns, especially during vanamahotsav. Try to convince people that the need for afforestation is far greater than that for urbanization.

In my hometown Virginia Beach, rows of trees are planted between roads. Like the cars go one way on one side and the other cars go the opposite way on the other side; in between those two sides they put grass in and plant small trees. Maybe where you're from, they can somehow spread the roads apart to make room for this?

Your exactly right. Where I don't follow is your question about how. Just plant trees. Prefferably in areas that will not cause problems with power lines, water pipes, and sewage, above or below ground. I find it sad that people often think modernization requires us to kill our communities natural beauty.

Trees do not improve ground water. On the contrary, they tend to deplete it. Neither are they a hedge against drought. The shade they provide is good, though.
