i intend doing research on the topic with specific interest on enegy audit in order to finding the overall effy and cost analyses of a power plant. losses are also of interest.

This topic needs a lot more space and time than I could put into this answer. You are talking about a "heat balance." It takes into account the total energy input, total energy output, and lost energy sources as the difference of the two. In other words: whatever energy (the fuel) goes into the system less the heat losses from all systems (leaks, radiation losses, uninsulated line losses, heat rejection, etc.) equals the total energy output as electricity. This assumes you are talking about an electrical generating station. It would be calculated the same way but as total heat energy output if you were discussing a heating plant.
