The reason is more than likely that you are searching for a God as described by a religion, and this is bad because all religions are wrong.
Is there a God, only one way to find out I guess, but until then it's a tough call.
There is no God that you can talk to, people will say that God has revealed himself to them. Obviously this isn't to be taken literally or God would be all over YouTube by now. And it's hard to believe anyone actually hears God for real. So what it comes down to is a belief that something good will happen thanks to "God." However it is the optimism that brings on this positivity. Just think the more you believe in something the more likely it is to seem true. If you believed that white people were supreme you would start to see it. Black people would seem like criminals, Mexicans would seem lazy, East Indians would come off like terrorists, all because this is what you believe so it becomes your perception.
Myself I believe that God is everything, it's complicated and simple at the same time.
Try to figure it out on your own though, believe what you want and keep an open mind.

Here are some things to ponder as to whether or not you are really seeking the God of the Christian Bible (I assume your question regards Christianity ... if not, please disregard the following):
* Do you consider yourself a sinner? Are you humble enough to realize that you need a Savior?
* Are you worried about Judgment Day?
* Do you believe that the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) give a reliable account of the life of Jesus?
* Have you carefully read one or more of the gospels? Mark is only about 20 pages long (depends on the size of the print).
* Are you willing to repent of those sins that God will reveal to you?
* Are you more interested in "fire insurance" than surrendering control of your life to the God who created you and has the right to tell you how to live your life? (this issue probably applies to many if not most people in your situation ... God is seeking true worshippers rather than expanding His 'head count')
* The Bible indicates that "faith comes from hearing the Word". Have you had extended discussions regarding finding God with a Christian you respect and admire? (not necessarily a pastor)
* Have you attended some kind of revival or festival? Note that there are a lot of bogus revivals "out there". I would recommend tracking down a tape or video of a Billy Graham sermon. My impression is that there are cable stations with re-runs of his crusades. If you live in a fair size city, your library can probably obtain such a tape ... perhaps an inter-library loan.
* My duh ... contact the Billy Graham Evangelism Association, explain your situation, and request assistance. Any kind of expense on your part would almost certainly be voluntary. The reason they raise money is to serve people in situations exactly like yours.

The belief is that He is on the other side of a door, waiting for you to let him in. It has to be you who does because the door cannot be opened from His side; you have the door handle. Stop trying too hard and slowly open the door. Everytime you think an injustice has been done to you by God, really think about it. One of the big reasons people have trouble believing is because they figure that because He all powerful he should fix everything for us, make sure there is no poverty, war, disease, etc.
It is important to know that he made mankind (tough luck to those want it personkind; that sounds stupid) independent thinkers with souls and power over the animals. In return, (at least for Protestants) animals have no soul, are born without sin and have an express ticket to heaven. The flip side of this is that God that we have to take care of ourselves, for good or bad. He gave us the mind power to advance medicine, go to the moon and beyond but those same type brilliant minds create the bombs, tinker with genetics, etc. It is man who is to blame for wars and famine and poverty. God is our father and like and any dad he had to step back and let live our lives for good or bad.
So if your difficulty is because of all you see around you, remind yourself of who caused it. But God is always there, a gentle voice or just a feeling when you are down, and in all natural beauty you see. Accept Him and He will always be there for you.
I would also advise you to talk to leaders of some local churches. Each religion had their own interpretations of the Bible. If you want to visit an Episcopal church, remember that church is currently undergoing problems from within. I am a former member of it. I now stick with the Church of England.
If it is of interest to you, I was agnostic most of my life; I felt pressured and annoyed by religious people. I started attending church infrequently with the man who became my husband. I was not confirmed until I was 31 years old. I understand what it is like to want that belief but have difficulties.

Read the God Delusion By Richard Dawkins
It will help you feel better about your disbelief
If god is so all knowing why would he only reward those that belief in him through blind faith? If there is a god he will reward you for trying your hardest to understand the world around you.

Because God is very hard to believe in.
That's why He's supposed to be so special.
I understand how you feel, except I haven't tried.
There are so many uncertainties, but I believe the answers are in some book or something.
Confusion prevails humanity.

Perhaps you are not looking in the right places.
The fact that you are looking tells me you want to believe, which pretty much means you believe, you just lack the ability to put trust in the Lord.
Find the place you think He would be the most, and search there. If He isn't there, look in other similar places.

Dude, look all around you at how beautiful nature is, how good it feels standing outside early in the morning with dew on the ground and the smell of the morning as the sun rises. Think about the wonderful feelings you get everyday when you're with people you love and know that god did all of that for you and gave you the capacity to experience those opportunities. Talk to him at night when you're alone and let him know how you feel and what you're thinking. Tell him what you are afraid of and what you love about life. Listen to him talking to you through the warm feeling you recieve throughout your entire body and you will know that he exists.

Behold all that is around you on earth: things, plants, insects, animals, birds and fish...
Don't you see that they have accurate systems governing and guiding their life?
Behold all that is above you in space: sun, moon, planets, stars, clouds, wind ... etc., aren't they all functioning properly and accurately and rendering valuable services to our life on earth?
Think of yourself, of your organs, of your numerous and efficient body systems, how they are cooperatively functioning to secure healthful life for you!
Who created all these fantastic things? Who established their accurate systems? Who is controlling this huge and complicated universe?
No one dared so far to claim creating, or being able to create, any single thing, even a hair!!
The Creator and The Sustainer of all these Creatures is One only; if there were more than one there would have been confusion in the heavens and the earth! That One is Allah (the only true God).
It is very logical, then, to acknowledge this fact, to know our Creator and Provider to be grateful to Him, and to submit ourselves and our life to His Wise and Merciful Guidance.
Our Creator has endowed us with intellect to understand and with freedom to choose the right path.
Allah has showed us the right path through his messengers sealed by Mohammad and His Books completed by The Qur'an.
In front of us there are two ways: one is leading to bliss in this life and in the Hereafter that is Islam.
The other is leading to misery and loss in this world, and to eternal punishment in the Hereafter. The choice is ours, what are we going to choose? May Allah guide us into the Right Path! Aameen!

then what do you believe in? i believe in a higher power but i also believe in science and reason. you have to decide for yourself. there is immense social pressure to believe in a god or some kind of higher power but its always someone else's idea of a higher power. i picked and choose from other people's spiritualities the things i want to believe in. sorta hodge podge but it works for ME. and that's all that counts
