I have been sick for about 2 weeks. I recently went to the doctor, and when I got my lab work back they told me I had a urinary tract infection, dehydration, and hypoglycemia. They said that my blood sugar was 59.
I am being sent to a dietician next week, but I am wondering what I can do in the meantime to feel better? I am really fatigued, I feel like I never get enough sleep and I have been missing a lot of class which is not good because I have midterms right now. I have a lot of pain throughout my body.
I have heard that people with hypoglycemia are at higher risk of getting diabetes. Is that true? Diabetes runs in my family.

I have had my blood sugar checked in the past... a few years ago it was 64 and the doctors thought it was too low. On average if they take it non-fasting it is in the 90 range, so I don't think I have diabetes. I have never come up as having high blood sugar.

No not true, hypoglycemia means that you are not providing energy through the sugars the body needs at the right time. Some times it causes you to faint because to get needed sugar to the heart, the body lowers the blood supply to the brain.
Hypoglycemia also means that you are producing enough natural insulin, but your eating habits are out of whack and the body runs out of muscle sugar.
It's best to eat five small meals a day, health food counts. But your body digests the food creates muscle sugar and it can keep the level of muscle sugar constant throughout the day.
Small portions of protein which is sugar neutral is often recommended because it is sugar neutral but is easily transformed by the body into the right amount of muscle sugar it needs. But you should cut back on starches and if you feel droopy or run down, a SMALL sugar snack or a piece of fruit which has fructose gives your body some sugar that your muscles can use and because your body doesn't have to take emergency measures, it gives your system time to readjust itself..
However what you said can happen, some people over compensate by eating too much surary foods instead of protein fruit or vegetables to get over feeling run down. If they over eat sugary food for a long time, then can cause themselves type 2 diabetes.

It is best to eat frequent small meals if you have hypoglycemia. High sugar foods are NOT what you should be using, they will trigger your body to relaese more insulin and you could end up with and even lower blood sugar. You are likely to feel tired with low blood sugar since your body is not getting enough glucose to provide energy to the cells. You can also have death of brain and heart cells from low blood sugar. The best way to get your blood sugar back up is with fruit juice for immediate relief, and milk and cheese and crackers to provide for more long term relief. A balanced diet avoiding high sugar, concentrated sweets is best for hypoglycemia. It is better to get your carbohydrates from complex carbohydrates like grains and vegetables and fruits. A low carbohydrate high protein diet is NOT a good diet for someone who has hypoglycemia, this can make the situation even worse and cause kidney impairment or even failure.
Hypoglycemia can be a symptom of diabetes as can hyperglycemia. It can also have other causes. It is common in individuals who drink alcohol and in people who have other metabolic disorders. Usually a diabetic is more at risk of having hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) when there is an infection present as in your case. For th urinary tract infection, drink lots of water and take your antibiotic til they are all gone, do not stop just because you start to feel a little better after a few days, this is what causes the super bugs we are dealing with today that are resistant to most of the antibiotics. Also, if you have not been taught this before, always wipe from front to back when you use the toilet, it is very easy for a female to get UTI's from improper wiping. Wash hands thoroughly before and after using the toilet.
Good luck with your midterms and hope you feel better soon.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

This is a serious condition, if not taking care of it. If you don't have proper sugar level in your blood, you will pass out. there is a sugar substitute for diabetic (glucose tablets) and it works faster than regular sugar.
Don't eat too much food or candy to treat a low blood sugar level. Like rcpaden said," if you eat too much sugar you have a sugar high and than you will have a sugar crash".
Please check with your MD to see if you are diabetic and if you need insulin. With proper diet and exercise, life style change, you can controll your condition.
Read the link below to know more about your condition. goodluck.

Yes people with hypoglycemia are at risk for diabetes. You need to rest and if you are on antibiotics it will take a few days for the meds to kick in. Eat small balanced meals 6 times a day including a protein, carbohydrate, fat and vegies ( example 1/2 of a ham and cheese sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes - eat the other half in 2-3 hours). This will keep your blood sugar level. Make sure you eat every 3 hours.

A lot of times hypoglycemia is a precurser to diabetes. If your pancreas is fighting to give insulin whenever you eat anything then it sometimes just gives out and then you have to take insulin and are considered diabetic. However, diet can change this. Several diets that help ...for the short term a low carb diet will make you feel better. It will balance your blood sugar... but the opposite is better for long term fell better and health. Dr. McDougals diet is fantastic to fix this. I am living proof. www.drmcdougall.com
Remember, don't eat high sugar stuff to help you temporarly feel better...it actually will make you feel worse. Sweetened drinks and foods will spike your blood sugar and then will cause it to come crashing down lower.

Blood glucose level less than 50 mg/dL is considered as hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia unrelated to exogenous insulin therapy is an uncommon clinical syndrome characterized by low plasma glucose level, symptomatic sympathetic nervous system stimulation, and CNS dysfunction. Many drugs and disorders cause it. Diagnosis requires blood tests performed at the time of symptoms or during a 72-h fast. Treatment is provision of glucose combined with treatment of the underlying cause.
Please see the web pages for more details on Hypoglycemia.

Between meals, try eating snacks that are low in simple sugars and fats and have a fair amount of starch. Fruits or cheese and crackers are good choices. Drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine and drinks with sugar including fruit juices. This may help to balance your sugar during the day. Good luck. I hope this helps.
