You would have probably more troubles visiting an arab country, or Russia, or Venezuela,or Colombia,or Brazil, or Nigeria, or even...Paris !!
I live in Paris, and here there are more and more violent young arabic and african boys who don't want respect the government, and want money without working, and they sometimes are brainwashed. They like hip-hop and NBA, but they hate USA.
These guys always attack lonely persons to steal cellulars, digital cameras and money. And they know that tourists always have money.
In Rio de Janeiro, even in Copacabana, there are guys who have guns and who kill tourists for a few dollars, and sometimes they rape the women ! In Colombia and Venezuela, it's also dangerous!
In Nigeria too, they have a new business : kidnapping tourists and ask money to families !
In some arab countries, at night,in a desert street, there is no guarantee for you that some crazy islamist try to make you pay US barbary instead of Bush.
In Turkey, you just have to be respectuous and be prudent in the crowd ( just a few pickpockets, as in Miami or Rome), that's all !
And police and army always keep their eyes open...
So you don't have to be scared, it's secure !...

If as you say you have friends in turkey ask them. personally I do not see you having any problems. True there is anti American sentiment(and not just turkey) but it is overrated. I'm Greek and we have a mutually cultivated hate that has been going on for a few centuries.an yet I visit turkey frequently and Turks visit Greece frequently without incident. Governments have different agendas from the people they rule. The US government will have think that the minute you land you will be lunched. This is a far cry from reality. By all means go and have fun. Your friends should know how to take care of you. Form your own opinion. I have also found out that it doesn't hurt and cost you nothing to agree with their anti American sentiments. It will endear you to them (this works everywhere) Diplomacy is always a good thing and should not be confused with your private thoughts.

Ankara is one of the most safe cities being the capital city, all in a regularity. There are a lot of tourists and foreign ppl from abroad (Americans included) living in Turkey as habitants.
Enjoy your trip there'd be no more danger than elsewhere in the US

Turkey is a modern, secular, democracy that is oriented towards the West thanks to the life and work of Kemal Atatürk, the revolutionary statesman who, like George Washington in the United States, was the founder of the Republic of Turkey and its first President. The Turkish army as the inheritor of his legacy is the guarantor of his values.
Americans may find that they have political disagreements with many Turks but they are as safe as they would be in France or Britain where they might find similar disagreements.

Yes of course it is. Turkey and the US are friendly countries. Many people in Turkey don't particularly care for the US government, but then again, some 65% of Americans don't either! Turks know the difference between individual Americans and Dick/Bush Co.

Hi,
Turkish-American relations are basically good and very strong. We want them to be that way and even better and we will do whatever we can to make it happen.
There are lots of examples of our great respect for and appreciation for Turkiye.
So that, do not worry. Turkiye is much safer than other countries.
Regards,
