My husband is going to visit his 16-yr-old niece next week. His sister died in an accident long back and this girl now lives with her father, step mother and 8-yr-old half-sister. I know I have to send something for both kids. But what? No make-up and stuff is allowed. Plus i've only ever met her twice in my life. (Last I met her was 3 yrs back and I gave her a really nice photo frame for many pics -- she's in boarding school -- and i gave her sis a cute kiddy handbag. Both of them seemed to like their gifts.) Now I have no time to think or go searching for things that might seem right for an all grown up 16 yr-old!! And I have no idea of her taste in books or music so that's out too. Bottom line? HELP!!!

You can get the young one art stuff, pretty paper, markers, gel pens, unique paper punches. Or friendship bracelet book with different knots, and a collection of embroidery thread, hemp cord, and small beads. Most little girls love this kind of stuff. You can present it in a caboodles organizer.

You can also do body sprays for little girls, like Love's Baby Soft, and the kid scents from bath and body works. Put in a big girl hairbrush, glittery body wash, and a big girl's shower sponge or some modest grown up nail polish in little girl colors. Can be presented in a caboodles as well.

For the older you can get a totebag or purse, a wallet, a cell phone cover, an iPod accessory, scented candles, a multipack of blank CDs to burn her own music, a bath and body collection.

You say makeup isn't allowed but at this age you could probably get away with spa stuff or skin care, including nice moisturizers or a sunscreen product...for the upcoming summer. Maybe an oil-free moisturizing sunscreen with a little tint for face, and a collection of lipbalms that have sunscreen, a battery op foam blade fan, all bundled up in small packages, presented in a big floppy straw hat or a water bottle...maybe work in a beach towel?

When you are dealing with trying to guess personal favs of things of someone you don't know, go for simple, clean designs, high quality pieces (it may be small, that's ok), most popular scents and colors. Then you have at least half a chance that the person will like it or see the value of it...and if they don't, they can easily find someone who will like it more. I would stay away from clothing because that is so hard to guess.

For either or both, you could arrange and pay for a limo rental for the child and a few friends and an adult to a parent approved location, pizza hangout, fast food place, movie, skating rink, game or concert.

16- that's tough. How about an iPod nano or something? If she already has an iPod, get her a iTunes gift card. Those are great, b/c then she can buy the music SHE likes!
