I blurted out something from my past, a conviction, and lost my job. Feel like an idiot. Please help me stop kicking myself in the ***.

I was honest on the application but they missed it and when I mentioned it later, the y double-checked and told me to leave. I USED to drink and now have completely turned my life around. The sad part is I was kicking butt, efficient, professional and sober. Everyone was impressed by my outfits and work ethic. I was willing to do whatever it took and help anyone out doing what they needed. I get waves of "what an idiot you are" and "you are the stupidest person on the earth" and I feel like a complete idiot. Now I am asking, "Do you want fries or onion rings with that?" I am honest but making a little over 2 dollars an hour. I was making 10.50 an hour when they told me to leave. I am not suicidal but feel miserable and wish the earth would open and swallow me up. Any positive or encouraging comments?

I was fired over a technicality. I wanted a jacket and I used a coupon for employees to purchase it. My mom said she would give it to me for christmas and charged it. I was investigated for 2 months and then fired when I told my side of the story. Corporate got involved and they told me to leave or they would press charges for stealing (1/2 of a jacket...it was a 50% discount coupon). I was pretty upset. I walked around the park for the last 3 hours of my shift in a mid december evening snowfall when it was about -5 degrees so my family didn't know. Know what though? You realize it happened, there is nothing you can do about it. Tons of good people get fired all the time for stupid reasons. They have a book out I would recommend about a whole bunch of REALLY successful people including Joe Torre and Larry King who have been fired and it had a positive impact on their life. It's called We Got Fired! by Harvey Mackay. Check it out.

lol I got fired once and it wasn't because of a secret from my past - it was because I was crap at my job!!!
So at least you don't have that to worry about!
You'll know for next time - it was a learning experience and you can build yourself back up to where you were. Make some friends and once they trust you start asking around about any job vacancies they know of.

p.s I have a great job now that suits me much better, it took some time but was worth the wait.

You said the truth. You have self respect. You didn't lie to yourself or them. I don't think they can leagally fire you on the bases of the information from which they hired you.

Reguardless though you probably wouldn't be happy there if they hired you back and you are probably worth more to yourself than they are to you, so make a fist and slide it up your jaw to your chin and know you are the better person and probably more honest than the lot of em.

You'll find better work in time where you are more appreciated by a better class of people.
