Could someone please tell me how to work the 4wd on a 98 explorer. Do I have to be in neutral or drive to engage it? What is it basically used for? Is it snow or slippery conditions? Thank you very much

I don't have the owners manual for this truck. It is a manual, not a stick shift. Thank you

1st of all you need to know about four wheel drive before you go playing with it! so download this supplement to your owners manual first & READ it before you do anything!!!!

After you've read that completely............
Here's the link to download your owners manual:

To learn how to operate the 4X4 system read the chapter starting on page 116.

I know you'll want to thank me for supplying you with this free owners manual (& perhaps the 'Best Answer') so... "You're Welcome!"

Do you have the manual stick on the floor or do you have the electric switch on the dash? You can shift into 4H while you are driving, no more than 35mph I believe. 4L is for very slow speeds and it will lock your wheels. You have to be stopped and the transmission needs to be in neutral. Look through the owner's manual and it all should be explained.

if it is the switch type you can go from auto to 4wd high while you are moving to go from 4wd high to 4wd low you must be stopped and in neutral only use the 4wd when the roads are totally snow covered or you are off the pavement using it on the road will ruin it READ THE MANUAL LUKE
