There could be dozens of reasons that could be keeping your awake at night, but chances are it's all in your head. You're probably trying so hard to fall asleep that you end up keeping yourself awake just by thinking too much. It's like when you try to lose weight... in order to be successful, you still have think about food (eating less, eating healthy, etc.) So you have to stop trying to force yourself to fall asleep.
Try this: Next time you get in bed try breathing with deep, shallow breathes... you know, the ones that really make your stomach rise and fall. Then count backwards from 100 in increments of 3 (ie. 100, 97, 94, 91, 88...)
It's so monotonous that you're brain will get bored and shut down.. which of course results in a good nights rest.
Now go to sleep!

Could be lots of reasons; I've got problems with that myself. It could be that you have too much going on in your mind and it won't settle down enough to let you rest, but there are so many possibilities. . .
If it's really serious, you might want to consider going to a doctor or a therapist for help, but there are things you can try first.
Try setting up a bedtime routine, kind of an adult version of what we do for little kids. Try to go to bed at relatively the same time each night. Take a warm bath or shower, read or find some other relaxing, non-stimulating activity for the last hour or so of the evening. Try drinking some herbal tea.
Listen to soothing music, get a sound machine (the sound of rain is always good for me), or try a relaxation tape. Learn deep-breathing exercises. Take some relaxation classes. I know it all sounds kind of silly, but you have to find what works for you, and something will. Good luck.
