Unfortunately, the division between denominations is mostly due to a lack of understanding of each other.
Catholics have their sacraments. They also belive that one must do good works. The reasoning behind this is that if you truly have faith good works will come naturally. Protestants see it as working for salvation. It's not.
There are differing beliefs about heaven, hell and limbo - and all the levels of each. There are differences between the sacraments and a doing away with them.
There are many things that seperate denomination. I would be hesitiant to say that one is more important then the other. In the end the splits were caused by multiple difference. Stemming from misunderstanding.

for the protestants and the catholics it was the point of salvation by faith that Luther posted.
Salvation of grace is greater than the salvation of works.
but when it came to Luthers beliefs He was still associated with the catholic church in many traditions.
the divisions of the church became Single doctrine disagreements.
Many people have believed in their own UNderstandings and are led away from the truth at the same time by wolves that enter the flock.
Men with charisma are often believed and followed more than those that have the truth. Jesus himself was the truth, but was rejected because men believed they were the TRUTH and many people followed the hypocrites more than jesus.
themost debated in the mormon religion is the NEED for resoration of the church.
the most debated in the catholic church vs protestants is the authority of hte pope, and his infalibility.
most debated in protestants is the belief the bible is perfectly preserved.
NO ONE has the truth, and NO one Knows God, there is not a single person on the planet that has SEEN God, but there are people who have met JESUS.

Between Catholics and Protestants its all about the status of Mary. That is the main sticking point. Then after Mary I would say the status of the Pope.
Between Christians (both Catholics and Protestants) vs Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses there are too many to mention but chiefly that they added to Gods word which is an abomination and that they have perverted what Jesus was about.

Interpretation of really minor points of theology. Actually there are some major theological differences between some denominations, but most are insignificant.

Roles of Men and women.
1. saying it is sexist not to have equality.
2. saying their are even natural distinctions which make us different...
No need to debate it though it is simple, yet some would rather please people than God, or be like those in the bible who would rather say "we cannot tell". Lovingly. William.
