I am a native speaker of English and thinking of becoming an ESL teacher. I am still trying to learn grammar. All the books I have bought confuse me and I have been speaking the language for 39 years. The best thing for you to do if English is not your first language is to find someone to practice with. Preferably someone who is patient and will correct your mistakes. Speaking a foreign language is a terrifying experience - I know. But I admire your courage and your desire to learn grammar. And if you can figure out what a dangling participle is please let me know.

It's difficult even for native English speakers to understand all the rules, and even when one does understand the rules, there are always exceptions.
The best way to become familiar with English grammar is extensive reading.
Practice makes perfect!!! (okay... maybe less than perfect.)

You shouldn't focus on memorizing the rules.

You should focus on practicing as often as you possibly can, most preferably with someone who can correct you when you make mistakes. Then the rules of English grammar will become second nature to you. You won't have to even think about it anymore.
