okay, i know religion is in itself a controversial subject nowadays, and i know that this question is going to provoke a lot of people, but why are people so fanatical about it when science has proved that most of the bible was a fabrication? ancient people created the concept of an all powerful intangible being(s) to explain things in nature that defied explanation. like for instance, the cycle of the sun and moon. before science proved that the earth revolves around the sun, the sunrise and sunset were the result of apollo riding his chariot across the sky. in today's society, mainstream christians/catholics, whatever, laugh at such concepts because we know better. but those same people will get argumentative and even violent if you so much as suggest that noah's ark never existed, or that jesus never rose from the dead. why? why can't those people just accept the fact that religion is no longer necessary and actually creates more problems than it solves?

this is a response to esther's answer. i haven't made anything up. people like you are the ones i'm talking about. you refuse to accept the idea that the bible was fabricated. it's a historical fact. the roman emperor constantine, who was a pagan his whole life and only baptized on his deathbed, compiled the original bible nearly 400 years after christ's death in order to unite his empire and keep religious warfare from tearing it apart. he was a smart man, he picked the winning horse, simple as that. and yes, evidence exists to support my beliefs. if there was ever a worldwide flood, there would be signs of it in the sediment layer. but there are none. therefore, any educated person living in reality will come to the inescapable conclusion that it never happened. the bible was meant to be a guide, nothing more. what matters is the message. i feel sorry for people like you who are so badly deluded that they think that the bible is an actual historical record. accept the truth.

AHEM - I haven't killed anyone over my religion. My beliefs forbid it. If you choose to go the road of the Atheist, fine. Do so at your own risk.

Science has NOT proven the Bible in error. Scientists for the most part (even non scientists like you who will believe anything they tell you) have no clue what the Bible really says. They read it simply as a book, the way one would read a fantasy novel and of course, when you are locked into that zone, thats all one will ever make of it.

If the Truth is hid, it is hid from those who are perishing and who do not know the true peril they are in. Rest assured, I will not kill you or anyone else for not believing as I do. But Middle East Muslims however, would love to have your head on a pike.

The question is always in unresolved state because of circumstances that are so wide, varied and essentially disparate. This situation has arisen as a genesis of many factors that too over a period of may be thousands of years. Lets see if following can help get some enlightenment on this :
1) What is religion? A procedure or path to identify, deify and worship some form of divine. It could or could not be idolised divine. So basically religion is a practice, full of certain actions, desired behaviours and procedures either to be undertaken individually or socially. Again this actions are prompted by set of predefined ideologies or principles.
2) Humans are born and brought up in an environment where upto certain age of understanding, they follow what is being guided to them by the environment. Environment here includes parents, family, education system, neighborhood, friends etc. In such process it is most likely that a human being gets his / her thought processes cultivated and developed to match the patterns of the surrounding. Being incapable to question any guidances or commands ( due to developing phase of reason and judgement in young age ) leads to following of any notion, practice, ideologies without testing them on the basis of reason. After following this for a longer period ( upto the age of youth ) the thought processes become more rigid and non flexible. Unless the individual develops his / her own realisations, thought processes, principles and understanding, it is quite likely that he / she will follow those practices or procedures which were adopted and transferred to him / her by environment.

In light of above, it becomes difficult (and sometimes impossible) for a person to test set practices whether in religion or in any other field of life on his / her own judgement or reason.

Try to imagine a situation, that if a child is brought up and reared without ever letting him / her follow any religious practice or any particular procedure would he / she be a fanatic ( I dont think so ).
Again a human form cannot be really identified at birth stage to which specific religion he / she belongs. So why any fuss about it?

Also more importantly people seek security and internal balance through socialising, one part of which is following a particular religion. So it also has some personal / basic human tendencies in action.

Thanks many !

My understanding is that some religions teach conversion by the sword. The flags of a number of theocratic nations have a sword in them (see link to definition of theocracy below)

I would point out that people who claim to be Christians and who commit such evils are going against the clear and repeated teachings of the founder of their faith, the Lord Jesus Christ.

* love your enemies
* turn the other cheek
* pray for those who persecute you

Just because a person claims to be a Christian does not mean that they really are. An incredible amount of evil has been done by "false professors".

However, it gets more complicated with doctrines regarding a "just war" and defending your family. Also, the Judeo-Christian Bible clearly gives the administration of justice to the government to protect its citizens.

Christianity teaches the concept that judgement belongs to God alone, and to turn the other cheek. It teaches that all fall short of the grace of God, and none are perfect, even those who are saved! Only through faith alone is our redemption assured, and through acceptance of Christ.

That being said, you are right - religion has never been necessary. Religion is politics, plain and simple. More people have died in the name of religion than for any other reason. Any. Other. Reason.

Faith, on the other hand, never killed anyone. Those that truly follow the teachings of Jesus Christ are not "Religious" by the modern definition of the word. They are "Faithful."

It saddens me that many who consider themselves Christians don't seem to even know the meaning of the word. Or the teachings of Christ.

People still kill each other over religion because many of religion followers have a weak faith.The weak faith people can be easily tempted by syatans.Syatan will bring people to a wrong path such as for killing,stealing,telling a lie,cheating etc.I think religion is always needed by humans as our life guide.We can measure someone comply or not by comparing it with the regulation in a religion.Religion is a criteria for judging a human action whether it is bad or good..Religion does not create a problem.The problem is done by the religion follower who does not comply to his/her religion..

For the same reason that people kill each other over any other reason. And by the way......hon....you really shouldn't make things up. No one, including "science" has proven the bible is a fabrication in any way, shape or form!

Uh, they are not really fighting over religious doctrines. Look beneath the cover and you will see they are fighting over land, natural resources (oil for one), and control of people. Some religionists are duped into fighting for a "holy mission," but all the big boys are in it for the money.

I'm an atheist, and I'm the first to admit that if it weren't over religion, it'd be over something else.

There's something inherently tribal about us that makes us want to defend (until death) our own kind, and to hate and sometimes even want to kill "the other". Racism, nationalism, homophobia, and other forms of hatred all stem from this basic principle.

We're all animals at our most basic level.
