I'm confused...does decaf coffee contain any caffeine or does it just have less caffeine then normal coffee?

Decaf coffee does have some trace elements of caffeine in it, but is is NOT caffeine free. It would take about 8-10 cups of decaf coffee to get the same amount of caffeine in regular coffee. The only way to get coffee with no caffeine in it would be to look for coffees labeled "caffeine free".

In the case of coffee, the decaffeination processes are performed on unroasted (green) beans, but the methods vary somewhat. It generally starts with the steaming of the beans. They are then rinsed in solvent that contains as much of the chemical composition of coffee as possible without also containing the caffeine in a soluble form. The process is repeated anywhere from 8 to 12 times until it meets either the international standard of having removed 97% of the caffeine in the beans or the EU standard of having the beans 99.9% caffeine free by mass.

Almost all brands of decaffeinated coffee still contain some caffeine. Drinking five to ten cups of decaffeinated coffee could deliver as much caffeine as one or two cups of regular coffee, according to research at the University of Florida Maples Center for Forensic Medicine. However, a new study undertaken in June 2004 has revealed that a naturally caffeine-free bean has been produced

Yes, it does contain some caffeine, but it has be de-caffeinated to some extent. If you use an automatic coffee pot, the first cup has the most caffeine. This is true for tea and regular coffee as well. So...if you want to further de-caffeinate your coffee, you can dump the first cup that brews and use the rest.

decaf has about 10 times less caffeine (like 10-20mg per cup)
